Mohamed Salah is now eighth outright on the Premier League's list of all-time top goalscorers after his winning goal for Liverpool against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

The Egyptian netted Liverpool's quickfire second in the 72nd minute at Anfield as the Reds came from behind to return to the top of the table thanks to Manchester City's surprise defeat.

It was his 164th Premier League goal in 273 appearances in the competition. All but two of those have come in a Liverpool shirt, with a brief stint at Chelsea a decade ago better best forgotten.

Before finding the net against Brighton, Salah was level with Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler on 163 goals. The 164th pushed Fowler down to ninth place on the list and he jokingly responded in kind.

"Always preferred number 9 anyway," he posted on X, referencing the Liverpool shirt number he became synonymous with in the late 1990s.

Fowler later wore the number 9 for Liverpool during his surprise 18 month-long second spell between 2006 and 2008, as well as for Perth Glory and Thailand's Muangthong United. But he also donned 8 at Manchester City and Cardiff City.

Fowler, nicknamed 'God' by fans at his Liverpool peak, initially wore 23 when he broke into the first-team aged 17 in 1993, until Ian Rush left in 1996.

Salah is now only 11 Premier League goals behind Thierry Henry (175) and 13 off Frank Lampard (177), both of whom he could catch this season. He is currently on seven for the campaign and has ranged between 18 and 32 Premier League goals per season since joining Liverpool in 2017.

Above them are the top five. Sergio Aguero plundered 184 for Manchester City, with Andrew Cole slightly further ahead on 187. Wayne Rooney finished on 208, with Harry Kane leaving English football in 2023 on 213. Way out in front is Alan Shearer's record 260.

But whether Salah, set to turn 33 in June, will have a realistic chance of cracking the top five remains to be seen. His Liverpool contract is due to expire at the end of this season and his future, along with those of teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, remains distinctly uncertain.
