Lyon midfielder and former Manchester United enforcer Nemanja Matic had the last laugh in his personal feud with Andre Onana after the Red Devils goalkeeper was at fault for both goals in Thursday's 2-2 draw.

The French hosts took a 25th-minute lead in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final after Onana allowed Thiago Almada's tame set-piece delivery to squirm over his gloves and into the top corner.

A pair of headers from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee on either side of half time ensured that United were 2-1 up as the contest approached its final seconds only for Rayan Cherki to snatch a stoppage-time equaliser. Onana spilled Georges Mikautadze's shot straight into the path of Lyon's prodigious forward to conclude an error-strewn performance which Matic had predicted.

In response to Onana's pre-match insistence that United were "way better" than Lyon, Matic brutally described the Cameroonian shot-stopper as "one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history".

Onana fired back on social media with a jibe at Matic's lack of success at Old Trafford. "At least I've lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world," Onana wrote above a picture of himself kissing the FA Cup trophy. "Some can't say the same."

Matic was an unused substitute during Thursday's 2-2 draw, but still found time to fire off another subtle barb. The towering 36-year-old midfielder posted a picture of his son alongside a glut of United shirts he had collected after visiting the away dressing room post-game. Onana's jersey was unsurprisingly absent, but the presence of Tom Heaton's 22 shirt - United's third-choice goalkeeper - was pointedly positioned next to his beaming son.

United head coach Ruben Amorim was at pains to defend his under-fire goalkeeper. "That can happen with any player," the Portuguese boss shrugged. "There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help. The most important thing is to be natural and then, when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I'm really confident in Andre.

"It can happen, if you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months."

It was put to Amorim that Onana may have been distracted by his war of words with Matic. "That can happen," United's coach admitted.

Yet, this petty feud cannot explain the consistent blunders committed by United's number one. As Opta highlighted after Thursday's tie, Onana has made errors directly leading to eight goals across all competitions over the past two seasons - more than any other Premier League goalkeeper.
