Newcastle United have opened talks with Crystal Palace over a deal to sign centre-back Marc Guehi, a report has revealed.
Guehi enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 campaign with the Eagles and further boosted his stock with a series of excellent performances with England at Euro 2024, attracting interest from a number of top sides across Europe in the process.
In England, the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have been regularly linked with Guehi, but The Athletic state it is Newcastle who have made the first move.
Newcastle entered "meaningful talks" with Palace earlier this week in the hope of sealing a blockbuster deal for one of the Premier League's most-wanted defenders.
Guehi's contract with Palace has entered its final two years and, as it stands, there has been no signs of an extension. Indeed, reports elsewhere have gone as far as to claim the 24-year-old is prepared to reject any offers of fresh terms.
United are known to be keen to sign a new centre-back this summer even following the acquisition of Leny Yoro but have failed with a double bid for Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is another target for United but the Toffees' asking price of around £70m is seen as too expensive.
The Telegraph reported back in June that Palace are prepared to demand in excess of £65m to part ways with Guehi, basing their asking price around Everton's valuation of Branthwaite.
Arsenal are unlikely to pay such a figure after landing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, but Liverpool remain on the hunt for a new centre-back. 90min understands the Reds, who were interested in Yoro, are keen on Eintracht Frankfurt's Willian Pacho.
