Newcastle United open up the 2024/25 Premier League campaign on home soil against the newly-promoted Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies are aiming to stage a resurgence following an injury-hit 2023/24 season which saw them finish seventh in the top flight having secured a Champions League berth the campaign prior.

Eddie Howe's side enjoyed a successful tour of the Far East before returning to Tyneside and recording a pair of pre-season victories, including a 4-0 win over Girona. Newcastle mean business and Southampton may well be the first to feel their wrath.

Russell Martin oversaw a swift rebuilding job on the south coast following the club's relegation in 2022/23. The Saints returned to the top flight via the play-offs last season following a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley. However, Martin still has a young and inexperienced squad at his disposal, with survival being their sole goal this term.

Here's 90min's preview of Newcastle's Premier League opener against Southampton.

Howe will be hoping Newcastle's injury woes don't permeate into the new campaign, but he will be without several players for the opening weekend.

Lewis Miley and Callum Wilson are both set to miss the start of the season, while Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are long-term absentees.

Sandro Tonali will return soon from a betting suspension, but the midfielder remains out of action for the time being. Jacob Murphy enjoyed an impressive pre-season and should get the nod down Newcastle's right.

Unlike Howe, Martin doesn't have many players missing through injury on the opening weekend. However, the Saints are likely to be without winger Kamaldeen Sulemana due to ankle issue, while Gavin Bazuna is out for the long haul with an Achilles injury.

The visitors could adopt the 3-5-2 formation that outwitted Leeds in the play-off final with new signing Ben Brereton Diaz partnering Adam Armstrong up top.

Newcastle vs Southampton score prediction

Martin has got to be pragmatic this weekend, because his Southampton side will be blown away if they rock up to St James' Park with the intent of playing through the fierce Magpie press. They'll be suffocated and overwhelmed.

This is an almighty task no matter how the visitors line up, mind. Newcastle are not yet fully fit but their core remains intact and Howe's stars will be keen to put on a show in front of an expectant Toon Army on Saturday.

This could be a long afternoon for the newly-promoted side.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-0 Southampton
