2022 World Cup last 16: All H2H records
The group stage at the 2022 World Cup is now over and teams are preparing for the sudden gear chance to knockout football.
There are no more second chances now; it's a straight knockout tournament and with the surprises we saw during the early days of the tournament, we cannot rule out any further upsets as teams bid to progress past the last 16 and into the quarter-finals.
Here are all the H2H records from the upcoming last 16 clashes.
Netherlands vs USA

The Dutch weren't stretched overly in Group A, recording seven points from three games to go through in first place. The USA showed their quality against Iran to go through as runners up, having previously drawn with Wales and England.
Their record against the Netherlands is bad, however. While they won the most recent encounter - a 2015 4-3 thriller that saw the USMNT scored three times in the final 20 minutes - they had lost the previous four games.
This will be the first meeting between the two sides at a World Cup, with all five games before being friendlies.

Argentina vs Australia

Argentina managed to avoid an early elimination by winning their final two Group C games, having by been shocked by Saudi Arabia in their opener.
They now face an Australian side they have only ever been defeated by once - in the first ever meeting between the sides in 1988.
They met across two legs in a 1994 World Cup playoff where the South Americans came out on top 2-1. In more recent times, Argentina beat the Socceroos 4-2 at the 2005 Confederations Cup and 1-0 in a 2007 friendly.

France vs Poland

As local European nations, France and Poland have squared off regularly enough over the years.
France came out on top of Group D despite defeat to Tunisia in their final game, while Poland secured second place ahead of Mexico on goal difference.
There have been 16 games in total between France and Poland, the last of which came in 2011. A Tomasz Jodlowiec own goal separated the sides in a 1-0 win for Les Bleus, whose starting XI contained the likes of Younes Kaboul, Marvin Martin and Guillaume Hoarau among more established stars. Robert Lewandowski and Wojciech Szczesny were in Poland's team that day.
They have met once previously at the World Cup in 1982, where Poland won 3-2 to earn third place, their joint-best finish in the competition.

England vs Senegal

England vs Senegal H2H record
England and Senegal have never played each other in men's international football, which makes this fixture one of the more intriguing last 16 clashes.
The Three Lions have faced African opposition at the World Cup before, most famously enjoying a dramatic 3-2 victory over Cameroon in the 1990 quarter-finals. Clashes with Nigeria and Algeria ended goalless in 2002 and 2010 respectively before a Harry Kane double saw his side beat Tunisia 2-1 in Russia in 2018.
For Senegal, the tournament in Qatar is only their third participation in the World Cup finals ever. They failed to go beyond the group stage in 2018, but they caused one of the upsets of the tournament in 2002.
A 1-0 win over France courtesy of Papa Bouba Diop's strike followed by two draws saw the Lions of Teranga reach the knockout stages for the first time ever. Henri Camara grabbed a brace - including a 104th-minute golden goal - in the 2-1 last 16 victory over Sweden.
Their memorable run eventually came to an end in the quarter-finals, where Turkey dumped them out courtesy of Ilhan Mansiz's golden goal.
Japan vs Croatia

There 's not much history between Japan and Croatia, though two of the three games contested have come in World Cups.
Japan stunned the world to win Group E thanks to wins over Germany and Spain, impressing with their defensive discipline even if they were beaten by Costa Rica. Croatia's midfield knowhow took them through as Group F runners up.
The first meeting between the pair came in 1997 as part of the Kirin Japan Cup. Japan won that thrller 4-3 before they met again in the group stages of the 1998 World Cup. Davor Suker netted the only goal of the game in victory for Croatia, who finished third thanks to Suker's six goals.
The 2006 World Cup in Germany also saw Croatia and Japan clash. A goalless draw saw Darijo Srna have a penalty saved and Luka Modric come on as a substitute, while Japanese stars like Shunsuke Nakamura and Hidetoshi Nakata on show.

Brazil vs South Korea

South Korea provided another charming underdog story as they stunned the already qualified Portugal with a 2-1 victory. That win sent them through as runners up, eliminating Uruguay in the process.
South Korea's reward for fighting their way through the group stages is a meeting with the winners of Group G, which is expected to be Brazil. The two sides met as recently as June earlier this year as Neymar scored two penalties in a crushing 5-1 win.
South Korea have only beaten Brazil once in nine attempts - in 1999, when Kim Do-hoon proved enough to beat a Selecao side including legends like Cafu, Juninho, Ze Roberto and Rivaldo.

Morocco vs Spain

If you're looking for a local derby vibe in the last 16, the fixture between Morocco and Spain is the place to be. The two counties share a border and there have long been political and migration tensions between the pair.
Morocco won a group for the first time in their history by finishing ahead of Croatia, Belgium and Canada, while Spain slipped up in the clash with Japan to go through as runners up.
They met back to back in a CAF-UEFA playoff which saw Spain come out on top 4-2 across two legs.
In 2018, Morocco - then led by Herve Renard - climbed into a shock 2-1 lead over Spain. Isco quickly equalised after Khalid Boutaïb's early opener before Youssef En Nesyri's 81st-minute effort put the Atlas Lions ahead again.
However, Iago Aspas' late strike salvaged a point for La Roja and helped them top the group.

Portugal vs Switzerland

Portugal's disappointing defeat to South Korea didn't hinder their last 16 qualification, still going through as group winners as Son Heung-min and co joined them in the next round.
They take on a Switzerland side not renowned for long runs at international tournaments, though they did eliminate France on penalties at Euro 2020. The also enjoy a winning record against the Portuguese Seleca, too.
That is partly due to some regular Swiss wins back in yesteryear, but the sides have squared off five times over the past six years - Portugal have won three of those with the Swiss claiming two victories.
