Last season's finalists Inter booked their spot in the knockout stages of the Champions League but were denied the chance to do so as winners of Group D.

Real Sociedad took that honour, claiming first place after a 0-0 draw with the Italian side on the final day of the round.

Portuguese giants Benfica salvaged a Europa League spot, narrowly edging out Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg with a 3-1 victory away from home in their last game of the group stage.

Going into this season's competition, Real Sociedad had not won a Champions League game since 2003. Xabi Alonso scored that winner against Galatasaray.

Two decades on, Imanol Alguacil's entertaining outfit went undefeated in a group containing quarter-finalists and runners-up from last season's Champions League. "It will probably take us years to realise what this group is doing," Alguacil gushed.

"I don't want to see any long faces," Inter manager Simone Inzaghi insisted after his side's status as group runners-up was confirmed. "Only smiles."

Last season's finalists boasted the same record as Real Sociedad (W3 D3 L0) and drew home and away with the Spanish outfit but were nudged into second place by virtue of an inferior goal difference.

Benfica lost their first four group games this season, going more than five hours of action before Rafa Silva scored the club's maiden European goal of the campaign.

All hope seemed to be lost when Roger Schmidt's side gave up a 3-0 half-time lead at home to Inter, ultimately emerging with a fortuitous point. However, Angel Di Maria rolled back the years to lead the Portuguese giants to victory over RB Salzburg in Austria, scoring directly from a corner in a 3-1 win.

It all began so well. Salzburg opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory at Benfica's Estadio da Luz, putting the Austrian champions top of Group D after the first round of matches.

However, Salzburg weren't able to add another win and crumbled in front of their home crowd against Benfica on Matchday 6, finishing bottom of a Champions League group for the first time in their history.
