2023/24 Premier League summer transfer window power rankings
- Arsenal and Liverpool have moved to secure major targets early on
- Brighton and Aston Villa have also made smart moves
- Kai Havertz, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mason Mount are among the high-profile movers
Perhaps we're entering an age of frantic openings to summer transfer windows as opposed to conclusions.
There's still plenty of business to be done, but Premier League clubs from top to bottom have made a lightning-quick start to the summer window. It's been hectic!
With deals going through at a canter at this early stage, there's certainly enough to assess and 90min have conjured up their power rankings for the business conducted by Premier League clubs so far.
So, who's impressed us the most at this early stage?
10. Burnley
An atypical Burnley outfit are poised to grace the top flight next season with Vincent Kompany at the helm. The Clarets dominated the Championship last term but have a battle on their hands if they're to retain their Premier League status next season.
Bolstering the defence has been the key focus this summer, with Jordan Beyer completing a permanent transfer from Borussia Moncehengladbach after impressing last season. He's been joined by Dara O'Shea, an Irish international who fared pretty well in the top flight with West Brom in 2020/21.
9. Brentford
The Bees would have expected David Raya to have departed by now, but their stubbornness over his £40m valuation turned Tottenham away and Man Utd are yet to make their move.
The Spaniard remains on the club's books, but he's still poised to leave with Brentford signing his replacement in Mark Flekken.
Kevin Schade will be looking to make a major impact in year two amid Ivan Toney's suspension, while Nathan Collins should slide straight into Thomas Frank's back three.
8. Bournemouth
Losing Jefferson Lerma to Crystal Palace was a pretty big blow, but Bournemouth could emerge as one of the most watchable teams in the Premier League next season.
Andoni Iraola's arrival has excited many and the progressive Spaniard will have a couple of X-factor attacking talents to work with. Hamed Traore has joined the Cherries permanently and Bournemouth have also completed the signing of Justin Kluivert from AS Roma.
The Dutchman is yet to settle since departing his homeland but he's blessed with bags of talent and Iraola could rejuvenate his stagnating career.
7. Newcastle
Newcastle haven't been overly busy so far and more signings are expected to arrive before the end of the window as they prepare for their first Champions League venture in 20 years.
However, the Magpies have made a marquee signing in Sandro Tonali, who joined from AC Milan for a club-record fee. The ardent Milanista may not free up Bruno Guimaraes from a holding midfield position, but he should work in harmony with the elegant Brazilian.
Newcastle may have overpaid for the Milan midfielder, but Tonali is undoubtedly an excellent fit for Eddie Howe's side and has all the makings of a fan favourite at St James' Park.
6. Aston Villa
The ambitious Villans are making moves.
If Unai Emery can get Youri Tielemans performing at a level that resembles his Leicester apex, his free transfer will be regarded as one of the steals of the summer.
The Belgian is set to be joined by Pau Torres from Villarreal, a player Emery coached during his time with the Yellow Submarine. While a gifted ball player, some have concerns over his physicality and potential acclimatisation struggles. Still, it's a move with high upside.
5. Brighton
The savvy Seagulls are at it again.
While Brighton have already lost Alexis Mac Allister (for a bargain price, it has to be said) and may see Moises Caicedo depart too (which won't be for a bargain, that's for sure), the club have already taken steps to mitigate these departures.
A club-record deal was agreed with Watford for the services of Brazilian star Joao Pedro before the end of last season, while James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud are extremely smart free-agent pickups for different reasons.
The addition of goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht will undoubtedly bear fruit in the years to come.
4. Chelsea
Christopher Nkunku is a mightily exciting addition, while Nicolas Jackson could blossom into Mauricio Pochettino's starting #9 moving forward.
However, Chelsea have impressed on the outgoings front so far this summer. Shifting deadwood was always going to be pivotal for the Blues and they've made an excellent start with Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy leaving for the Saudi Pro League. The Blues also recuperated big fees for Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic's exits.
Mason Mount's departure to Man Utd will sting, however.
3. Tottenham
Tottenham's tame attempts to rebuild have proved futile in recent years, but it looks as if Spurs are finally heading into a summer transfer window with a clear plan.
The club has moved efficiently to sign Hugo Lloris' successor and the midfield playmaker they so desperately needed. Expectations are high for James Maddison in north London, while Guglielmo Vicario could be Spurs' keeper for the next decade. Free agent Manor Solomon should be next through the door.
However, Tottenham's window will be defined by the moves they make at centre-back, while the cloud of Harry Kane's future still looms large.
It's a promising start nonetheless.
2. Liverpool
Liverpool were always going to be aggressive in the market after missing out on Champions League football last season.
A midfield reshuffle is the club's summer priority and the two deals they've completed so far will undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp's engine room. Their deal to sign Mac Allister from Brighton could prove to be one of the bargains of the window, while Dominik Szoboszlai arrives from RB Leipzig as a superstar waiting to manifest at Anfield.
The Reds mean business and there's still plenty left to be done this summer.
1. Arsenal
Arsenal have only completed the signing of Havertz from Chelsea at the time of writing, but they're expected to add Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber to their ranks.
Havertz's addition is a curious one, but the German should benefit from Mikel Arteta's framework in north London. Rice, meanwhile, is set to join for a British record fee and his impact has the potential to be transformative. The Gunners also required superior defensive depth and look set to acquire that with the versatile and technically proficient Timber.
Overall, the deals for Timber and Havertz could go under the radar given Rice's significance, but all are set to contribute to an improved Arsenal that look ready to compete for the Premier League title once more.
