Chelsea's January Spending Budget Revealed After Landmark Ruling Overturns Transfer Ban
Chelsea's transfer budget for the upcoming winter window could be as much as £150m after it was confirmed that their two-window ban had been cut in half.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled against maintaining the club's ban beyond the summer, in a landmark legal victory for the Blues that means they will not have to serve their punishment in full.
Frank Lampard's side were hit with the ban for violating rules regarding the protection of young players on 150 occasions - those cases involving about 70 players - prior to the summer, forcing their new manager to rely heavily on academy stars such as Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.
It appeared to be a blessing in disguise, however, with Lampard guiding Chelsea into the Premier League top four and within touching distance of the Champions League knockout stages with some fine performances.
Whatever his stance on the upcoming window is, though, the Telegraph have stated that the Blues boss will be handed a £150m warchest with which he can scour the market with, following news of their successful appeal against the ban.
Thus, speculation has already began emerging over potential targets, with Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho among the names in the frame. Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha is also thought to be of interrest, with his agent having already touched base about his client's future.
Another player mentioned has been former central defender Nathan Ake, who the club will be able to buy back for £40m thanks to a clause inserted into the £20m deal agreed with AFC Bournemouth two years ago.
While nine wins from their 15 Premier League games this season has the club well-placed in the top four, defensively there are still questions marks surrounding Lampard's side. The Blues have conceded 21 goals already this term, the most of any side in the top seven places, meaning defensive reinforcements may be on the cards in January.
