Frank Lampard Rules Out Olivier Giroud Move to Tottenham & Insists There Will Be No Incomings

Frank Lampard has insisted Chelsea's transfer activity is "95%" done, ruling out a departure for Tottenham target Olivier Giroud.

In a bid to secure first-team football ahead of the upcoming European Championships this summer, Giroud has been eager to leave west London after falling down the pecking order at Chelsea - even though his position in France's squad is likely not under threat.

90min first told you that Spurs had been approached by Giroud’s agent with a view to signing the former Arsenal striker on a two-and-a-half year deal, while 90min later revealed that Spurs were growing increasingly confident of striking a deal with Chelsea.

But head coach Frank Lampard has now ruled out the possibility of Giroud leaving, confirming when asked about the possibility of Dries Mertens joining the club, that there would be no movement.

"The window is probably 95 per cent shut for us and no ins means no outs,’ he stated, via the ​club's official website. "I know there are hours left of it but the answer would be no to most of the players we’ve been linked with.

"I wouldn’t say it’s been frustrating as I’m very aware of how football is. Some things are not in my control so my first thought is always what happens on the training pitch. It’s clear we wanted to bring players in and I’ve made that pretty clear over the last weeks but it hasn’t happened.

"Olivier Giroud in this window has been incredible as a professional and as a man. We all know that there’s been interest and I’ve sat in every press conference and said it had to be right for Olivier, for myself and for the club. 

"He’s been impeccable in that period and I’ve got huge respect for him for that and as a player. Will he leave? No."

A source has since told 90min of Giroud's unhappiness with the situation. He has made his feelings known to Chelsea and remains hopeful that a deal can be resurrected, if Tottenham are still willing to negotiate terms. Lampard's words, though, suggest that he won't get his way.

Earlier in the window it appeared nailed on that Giroud would swap England for Italy, with Inter closing in on a deal that would have reunited Antonio Conte with his former player. A move to Serie A was even classed as a ​'total agreement' at one point, with an alleged €5m to be paid for his services.

Spurs' late move threw a spanner into those works, with 90min learning that Inter were only ever interested in securing a pre-contract agreement. Lazio were also keen, but Chelsea's inability to bring somebody in now means the World Cup winner will likely have a watching brief for the rest of the season.
