Ranking AC Milan's 10 Best Home Kits of All Time
By Mitch Wilks
The infamous red and black stripes of AC Milan are forever etched into football's history.
I Rossoneri, literally meaning 'the red and blacks', have become synonymous with the design, and have donned it ever since their creation in 1899. It's simple yet striking.
Despite falling off a bit, footballing wise, in the last decade, AC Milan's kits have remained as beautiful as ever. And while they might not quite hold the same memories as earlier kits, they are just as pleasing to the eye.
It's been some task narrowing this one down to 10, but we've given it a go anyways.
10. Traditional (2017/18)
After previous seasons' efforts were much more adventurous and played around with different takes on the classic striped design, the 2017/18 season saw Milan go back to basics with the home kit.
Manufactured by adidas, the shirt had a classic round neck and scrapped the dark grey tones that had been used previously, instead opting for the traditional two-tone. They also re-introduced the infamous striped back, and completed the strip with white shorts and socks. Vintage.
9. Gold (2013/14)
The 2013/14 season saw adidas push the boat out with the Milan home kit, while trying to keep a classy look to it. The classic three stripes on the shoulder were now gold, and the kit used a v-neck collar that was complimented by a subtle Italian flag.
Very fine black pinstripes sat in between the more typical, large black stripes and added a new dimension to a traditional design. It's a shame the subtle hints of gold didn't translate on the pitch however, as the Rossoneri slumped to an eighth-placed finish in Serie A.
8. Flag of Milan (2014/15)
adidas' effort for the 2014/15 season was audacious to say the least.
For the first time in the club's history, the home kit featured two different shades of red, and combined different sizes of black stripes to complete the base.
The other major change was the decision to instead don the St. George's Cross on the chest, instead of the club's usual badge.
7. First adidas Season (1990/92)
Kits in the 1990s were simply different gravy. And they were even better when modelled by Ruud Gullit.
The 1990/92 AC Milan shirt was adidas' first effort since taking over as kit supplier, and it remains one of their most iconic to date.
The shirt is Milan in its truest form. Basic red and black stripes, complimented by a beautiful collar in the same colour. Completed with the vintage Adidas trefoil and the traditional star as the badge, the shirt was worn by a number of legends as the Rossoneri retained the Intercontinental Cup.
6. Centenary (1999/00)
The 1999/00 season saw AC Milan celebrate 100 years as a football club, which was commemorated with a classy home shirt that had a very vintage feel.
The club reverted to the original badge used upon their inception in 1899, and donned the thinner, black pin stripes in the throwback effort. Despite finishing third in Serie A, new signing Andriy Shevchenko finished as the league's top scorer in his first season with the club, bagging 24 Serie A goals.
5. Lotto (1993/94)
The 1993/94 season saw Milan's kits produced by Italian suppliers Lotto. Not much changed in terms of the design during this period, simply because it didn't need to.
The black collar and v-neck and the simple red and black stripes were classy, but what makes this effort even more special is the success of the season. Milan won the Serie A and the Champions League that season, before Barcelona in the final 4-0.
4. adidas (2011/12)
Endless amounts of good memories surround this kit.
adidas produced a modern classic for the 2011/12 campaign, combining the traditional thin pin stripes with white accents. The combination worked tremendously, and looked even better on the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexandre Pato, who famously scored a goal inside 24 seconds against Barcelona that season.
3. adidas (2009/10)
While white featured more prominently on the 2011/12 effort, it was used in a more subtle way in the 2009/10 season.
Milan took to the pitch in a spectacular home shirt; black sleeves were highlighted by glossy red adidas stripes, while the trademark stripes on the front were accented by a tremendous white collar. The kit was worn by David Beckham, Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldinho, who were playing for the Rossoneri at the time. Not a bad set of free-kick takers, that.
2. Kappa (1987/89)
Kappa's effort was the first in the series of staple designs for Milan during one of their most successful periods.
They opted for the red and black collar, and simply let the stripes do the talking. The design would stay for years to come, even with changes in suppliers, and the kit was worn in the 1987/88 season that saw a revitalised Milan win their first Scudetto since 1979.
1. adidas (2006/07)
After a lot of thought, the kit that takes top spot is the adidas effort from the 2006/07 season.
Despite finishing fourth in Serie A, AC Milan climbed the top of the European mountain, winning the Champions League in fine fashion, dispatching of Liverpool. The season also saw the coming out party of rising Brazilian star Kaka, who scored 10 goals in the European competition.
The kit was a beauty; the fierce red and black stripes were complimented with white sponsoring and classy black and red collar. The sleeves were black, and the kit was completed with a fine gold trim that ran around the edges. Timeless.
