As the 2023/24 Premier League season begins to wind down, it's time to take a look back at what's been an entertaining year of football.

From VAR mishaps, to an all-time great title race, to an all-time bad group of relegation candidates, to new stars coming for the fore, the 2023/24 campaign has had a bit of everything for football fans.

But who's been the best player in England's top flight this season? We at 90min have taken a look...

8. Virgil van Dijk

After struggling for form immediately after his horrific knee injury a few seasons ago, Virgil van Dijk finally looked like the Virgil van Dijk of old again in 2023/24.

Tasked with taking over as Liverpool's captain following Jordan Henderson's departure, Van Dijk has taken to his new leadership role like a duck to water, guiding his side back to the upper reaches of the Premier League table.

7. Alexander Isak

Does Alexander Isak win the 2023/24 Premier League Golden Boot if he doesn't have two spells on the sidelines with groin ailments?

Quite possibly.

When fit, the Sweden international have been one of the most impressively clinical strikers in the division - netting 20 goals in just 24 starts.

The fact that he's been compared to Thierry Henry at times this season really tells you all you need to know about how good Isak has been.

6. Erling Haaland

Can scoring over 25 league goals be considered a down year for anyone other than Erling Haaland?

Although he hasn't been able to hit record-breaking goalscoring heights during the current campaign - largely due to injuries - the Norwegian has still been able to do enough to likely secure a second consecutive Golden Boot. Nice one.

5. Cole Palmer

No one expected Cole Palmer to be this good.

The attacking midfielder rocked up at Chelsea with little fanfare on deadline day in the summer, but he's gone to become the Blues' undisputed MVP of the 2023/24 campaign.

Palmer has been in mesmeric form in the final third, bagging 30 goals contributions in 30 Premier League games, including a famous hat-trick against Manchester United. Impressive stuff.

4. Ollie Watkins

Simply put, Aston Villa are nowhere near a top-four Premier League football club without Ollie Watkins.

The England international has enjoyed career-best form under the tutalege of Villa manager Unai Emery this season, consistently providing goals and assists for his side.

How consistently, you ask?

Well he's scored 19 goals and set up a further 12, so pretty damn consistently if you ask us.

3. Martin Odegaard

With Kevin De Bruyne missing a large bulk of the season through injury, there was a 'best attacking midfielder in England' vacancy to be filled in 2023/24, and it's fair to say that Martin Odegaard filled it.

The Arsenal captain has been one of the most consistently brilliant players in the division this season, providing his side with control and creativity in the middle of the park as they attempt to win their first league title in two decades.

2. Declan Rice

The signing of the season?

Absolutely.

Sure, he cost over £100m, but you can't argue that Declan Rice hasn't already paid back that fee in his maiden campaign at the Emirates Stadium.

The England international has been the driving force behind Arsenal's title challenge.

1. Phil Foden

Phil Foden has seemingly been destined to become the best player in the Premier League for quite a while, and in 2023/24 he officially broke through the glass ceiling.

The FWA Footballer of the Year, having taken on the creative and goalscoring mantle from the regularly injured Haaland and De Bruyne, has developed into a genuine superstar over the last 12 months.

His 16 goals and eight assists have been vital to Man City's attempts to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
