It seems a little bit of a stretch to be chanting 'Ole's at the wheel' freely after the start to the season Manchester United have had, truth be told.

Yes, the road is starting to look a little smoother game by game, but it's been a bumpy ride in the opening month of the season that's left United fans desperately reaching for their seatbelts.

It's not been all bad though. Sure, only one player has been signed and it feels inevitable that the club will merely give in for Borussia Dortmund's asking price for Jadon Sancho or miss out completely despite months of haggling, but there are positives. Donny van de Beek has proven a smart addition and Sancho will too - should he sign.

Among the inconsistency, there have been standout players. 90min has collated average performance ratings for individuals from every Premier League fixture thus far to provide you with top three for the month of September.

Here's Manchester United's three standout stars for September. 'Standout' used lightly, of course.

3. Anthony Martial

Appearances: 2
September Average Rating: 5.5

After a career best campaign last season that saw him score 23 goals in all competitions, Martial is yet to dust off his shooting boots this time around.

It's been a somewhat quiet start to the season for the Frenchman, but by no means has he been one of the bad eggs in the United squad as of late. He's working tirelessly off the ball as a centre forward and now finds himself in more dangerous positions on a consistent basis.

It's been incredibly frustrating watching the Frenchman drift in and out of the game on the left flank in recent years, and his slow start in the league this season hasn't helped, but he is getting there.

That first goal is coming imminently.

2. Bruno Fernandes

Appearances: 2
September Average Rating: 6

Bruno Fernandes set the world alight following his January transfer to United and proved to be exactly what their attack was missing to link all the pieces together.

He's struggled in bits so far this season, but again hasn't been helped by having to up his workload to compensate for a lack of quality around him. United are playing like a team who are still knackered from a late end to last season - because they are - and it isn't helping their Portuguese star man's game.

Fernandes has done his best to make something out of nothing, tirelessly chasing down loose balls and wayward passes. A goal and an assist in a lacking team shows his importance when the going gets tough.

Say what you like about however many penalties he happens to score, but whenever he steps up, you know it's going in the back of the net. The man is rife with confidence.

1. Marcus Rashford

Appearances: 2
September Average Rating: 6

The rating doesn't blow the roof off, and the fact that United's joint best players of the month are averaging six says it all about them so far this season, but Rashford has looked on the up once again.

After seemingly being ruled out for the season early in the new year, the lockdown and subsequent restart of play allowed the England international to come back into contention, but he struggled to find any real form and looked off the pace.

It feels like Rashford is still finding his feet after that stress fracture in his back, but he's now operating on a higher level again. There's work still to be done and he isn't at full sharpness, but his solo goal against Brighton is testament to what he's got in his locker.

Man of the people off the pitch, player of the month on it. Bag secured.
