90min's Definitive European Power Rankings 2020/21 - Week 10
By Tom Gott
Following a week in which:
- Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League.
- Inter crashed out of the Champions League.
- Real Madrid didn't crash out of the Champions League.
We at 90min rank the top 15 teams in Europe with a little help from movie quotes from 2010.
15. Inter (Down 4)
"So long, partner." (Toy Story 3)
Antonio Conte said goodbye to the Champions League for the bazillionth time in his career this week, and things went so badly for Inter that they're not even in the Europa League either.
He then proceeded to flip out at the press...again. A standard week for him, then.
14. Sassuolo (Down 2)
"Downward is the only way forward." (Inception)
Sassuolo tumbled out of the Champions League spots as a result of their 0-0 draw with Roma.
Fortunately, things are tight at the top of Serie A, and one good week could see them right back up there.
13. Paris Saint-Germain (Re-Entry)
"Only thing you need to know is the job's real, and the money's real." (The Expendables)
The money's definitely real for PSG, whose expensive squad strolled through to the Champions League round of 16 with a routine win over Istanbul Basaksehir.
A special shout-out to the French side for showing their support to Istanbul assistant Pierre Webo during the alleged racism storm. That's how it should be done.
12. Borussia Dortmund (Down 4)
"Unpredictable!" (Despicable Me)
Are Dortmund bad this year? Are they good? Does anyone actually know?
A 1-1 draw with Frankfurt was followed by an unconvincing 2-1 win over Zenit, so the jury's still out on Lucien Favre's side.
11. RB Leipzig (Re-Entry)
"Waiting for me to... commence a conversation, one can wait rather a long wait." (The King's Speech)
They had to wait a while to make sure they were going to beat Manchester United, but RB Leipzig managed to hold off a late comeback and book their place in the Champions League round of 16.
10. Juventus (Up 5)
"Everything we know about you guys... is wrong." (How to Train Your Dragon)
Just as we were starting to think that Juventus might be bad, they stepped up and proved their class by beating Barcelona (who are actually bad) 2-0.
They're climbing up Serie A and finished top of their European group. Who could ask for more?
9. Real Sociedad (Down 2)
"You know, you really don't need a forensics team to get to the bottom of this. If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook." (The Social Network)
You need a forensics team to get to the bottom of where Real Sociedad's momentum has gone.
That's now five consecutive draws for the former La Liga leaders, who scraped through to the Europa League knockout stages by the skin of their teeth.
8. Bayer Leverkusen (Up 2)
“Sometimes I believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” (Alice in Wonderland)
Bayer Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga title seemed impossible at the start of the season, but now?
Now, not so much.
7. Rangers (Up 2)
"I never actually put my foot all the way down to the ground with the accelerator like that. It got me slightly aroused." (The Other Guys)
Rangers are going full-throttle in every competition this season.
They added two more wins and six unanswered goals this week, with Steven Gerrard's side looking irresistible at times.
6. Liverpool (Down 1)
"Thank you lord for a warm bed to sleep on, thank you for the food we are about to eat, thank you for a roof over our heads on cold nights such as this, thank you for companionship in hard times like these, Amen." (The Book of Eli)
Liverpool will be thanking the heavens that they have made it through another week without any new injuries.
The 4-0 win over Wolves was the highlight of the week for Liverpool, who took their foot off the gas for the dead-rubber draw with Midtjylland.
5. Chelsea (Down 2)
"I feel confident for this fight. In fact, I was under the impression I'd be fighting a better fighter."
"I'm just grateful to be here and have the shot for the title." (The Fighter)
Do Chelsea actually have a shot at the title?
Their comeback victory over Leeds showed that the Blues have a little something about them this season that was missing last year. Can Frank Lampard pull this off?
4. Atletico Madrid (Up 2)
"Yeah, that's right! We're superheroes! You love us!" (Kick-Ass)
Atletico Madrid are sitting pretty at the top of La Liga, and they've still got two games in hand!
They're building up some real momentum, which sounds like bad news for upcoming opponents Real Madrid.
3. Tottenham Hotspur (Up 1)
"I have this radical idea that if you treat a patient with respect, listen to him, try and understand, you just might reach him." (Shutter Island)
Jose Mourinho has definitely reached his Tottenham players.
Spurs left Arsenal in ruin after the north London derby, reclaiming their spot at the top of the Premier League table in the process. All in a day's work.
2. Bayern Munich (-)
“In life the first act is always exciting. The second act, that is where the depth comes in.” (Grown Ups)
Most of the excitement of Bayern Munich's 3-3 draw with Leipzig was saved for the first half, when four of the six goals were scored within 17 minutes.
Bayern had to claw their way back from behind twice and eventually had to settle for a point which keeps them at the top of the table.
1. AC Milan (-)
"The longer we stay here, the stronger he gets." (Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows - Part 1)
Milan remain at the top of the mountain. Simply put, there's nobody stronger than I Rossoneri right now.
Two more games, two more wins, and they didn't even need Zlatan Ibrahimovic!
