Paul Pogba came off the bench to rescue Manchester United as he struck the only goal in their 1-0 Europa League last 16 win over Milan on Thursday, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men edging the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

A tepid first half had little in the way of goalmouth action, with Dean Henderson producing a couple of smart saves to keep the score at 0-0.

Pogba was introduced at half-time as Solskjaer went in search of that elusive away goal, and it didn't take long for the Frenchman to make his mark. After some pinball in the Milan area, the ball fell to the midfielder's feet and he produced a brilliant finish to outfox Gianluigi Donnarumma and hand United the advantage.

Milan threw everything they had at the visitors as the clock began to tick down on their Europa League campaign, but they were unable to find the breakthrough as the Red Devils booked their place in the last eight.

That's the match highlights out of the way, now to those Milan and United player ratings...

AC MILAN RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) - 5/10 - Made to look a bit of a fool by Pogba as he put him on his backside with a dummy before clipping the ball over him to bag the winner.

Pierre Kalulu (RB) - 6/10 - Offered a constant outlet on the Milan right and played more like a winger for much of the game.

Fikayo Tomori (CB) - 7/10 - Pulled off a number of brilliant last-ditch challenges to deny United. Needed to use his pace to combat the rapid Red Devils frontline and he played very well.

Simon Kjaer (CB) - 7/10 - Clearly clued up on the threats of the United frontline from the first leg and defended brilliantly against them. Over the two legs he was arguably the standout player.

Theo Hernandez (LB) - 7/10 - Constantly cutting inside and driving at the United midfield with the visitors struggling to shackle him.

2. Midfielders

Franck Kessie (CM) - 6/10 - Combative and aggressive but made a mess of a number of simple passes to his teammates. Stuck to Bruno Fernandes and made sure the Portuguese magician didn't run riot.

Rade Krunic (CM) - 6/10 - Neat and tidy in midfield but struggled to really drive his side forward as they went in search of an equaliser.

Soualiho Meite (CM) - 7/10 - Sat deep in the midfield and did a great job of recycling possession and helping maintain the pressure Milan were applying.

3. Forwards

Alexis Saelemaekers (RW) - 6/10 - Never neglected his defensive duties and was key in Milan's attempting to shackle the marauding Luke Shaw.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu (ST) - 6/10 - Clever footwork in and around the area which often threatened to open up the United back line. A couple of decent efforts from range but couldn't create a real gilt-edged chance on the night.

Samuel Castillejo (LW) - 5/10 - Showed plenty of work rate and effort but never looked like causing United any problems.

4. Substitutes

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (ST) - 6/10

Diogo Dalot (RB) - 6/10

Brahim Diaz (RW) - 5/10

MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Dean Henderson (GK) - 7/10 - Continued to deputise for David de Gea. Started the game very confidently which will have pleased his manager considering his late slip-up in the first leg. Pulled off some big saves to secure the 1-0 win.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 6/10 - Tried to surge forward and aid the attack but his final ball just wasn't there. Defended well late on with Milan beginning to push.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 7/10 - Produced a superb block in the first half to keep the score at 0-0. Solid all evening and was a huge part of the win.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 6/10 - Solid. Tasked with marking Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the Swede was introduced in the second half and he did well to limit him to only one half-chance.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 7/10 - Did his best to stretch the game by staying out wide and it helped to open up the game as United's midfield players began to gain control.

6. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM) - 8/10 - Rarely credited for his ability on the ball but he bossed the midfield at times and had the opposition chasing shadows.

Fred (CM) - 6/10 - Preferred to Nemanja Matic in the midfield. Lost cheap possession on a number of occasions as his side looked to build attacks, but his overall display was pretty good as he added some much-needed energy to the team.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 6/10 - Pinpointed as the United danger man and was surrounded by Milan midfielders whenever he touched the ball.

7. Forwards

Daniel James (RW) - 5/10 - Didn't look right from the off and could be seen holding his back in the early stages. Battled on but struggled to impact the game.

Marcus Rashford (ST) - 6/10 - Milan had clearly learned their lesson from the first leg and they didn't allow the England man the space to run in behind.

Mason Greenwood (LW) - 6/10 - Looked sharp on the right-hand side but struggled to find himself much space as the Milan defence looked to crowd him out.

8. Substitutes

Paul Pogba (CM) - 8/10 - Changed the game by providing some drive in midfield and securing the winner.
