Milan team news

Milan's greatest ever start to a Serie A season - 31 points from 33 available - has been made all the more impressive considering the raft of injuries to Stefano Pioli's intricately assembled squad.

Davide Calabria may have avoided joining the likes of Samu Castillejo (hamstring), Ante Rebic (ankle) and Junior Messias (muscle) in the treatment room despite being forced off at half-time following a blow to the head against Porto in midweek.

Gianluigi Donnarumma's replacement Mike Maignan has had his seamless start to life in Milan clouded by a wrist injury that could keep him out until December, while Theo Hernandez denied himself a derby appearance with a dismissal in the club's last domestic outing against Roma.

However, the Rossoneri welcomed Alessandro Florenzi back to training and were able to rest the spine of the team in midweek - Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Franck Kessie and Simon Kjaer - surely with the derby in mind.

Inter team news

Simone Inzaghi, meanwhile, has a full compliment to choose from. Aside from the notable exception of Christian Eriksen, who has been barred from playing in Serie A for the entirety of the campaign following his cardiac arrest at the European Championship.

Milan vs Inter predicted lineups

Milan: Tatarusanu; Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Ballo-Toure; Kessie, Tonali; Saelemaekers, Diaz, Leao; Ibrahimovic

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Perisic; Martinez, Dzeko

Milan vs Inter head-to-head record

These behemoths of the Italian game are set to meet for the 229th time across all competitions on Sunday. Inter edge out Milan with 84 wins to the Rossoneri's 77 overall and also boast a superior record in the fixture of late; winning six of the last seven tussles with their 'cousins'.

Despite the glittering talent on the pitch, the action in San Siro's stands at a Derby della Madonnina - whether it's a vespa lit aflame or the stunning tifos coordinated across the curva - rarely fail to catch the eye.

Milan vs Inter score prediction

One spot in the table may be all that separates these famous foes but there is a seven-point chasm between second-placed Milan and Inter in third. The last time the Rossoneri went into a derby with more of an advantage, their current coach Stefano Pioli was in Inter's dugout.

Milan - with a delicately balanced squad of experience and youthful exuberance - have been imperious this term; creating and scoring an abundance of chances while boasting the second-best defence in Serie A with their number two between the sticks.

While Inter are firing on all cylinders going forward, Inzaghi's inherited squad are in the process of replicating the defensive resolve that defined Antonio Conte's reigning champions. While neither side is a nailed-on winner, the intrigue of this high-spec showdown is all but guaranteed.

Prediction: Milan 2-1 Inter
