Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has tested positive for coronavirus and is self-isolating.

McCarthy has been an ever-present between the sticks for the Saints this season but will miss Monday's clash with Liverpool and is also a doubt for the FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury.

Ahead of Monday's game, Hasenhuttl told the press: "After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with Alex McCarthy, so he's out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game, as he has to self-isolate for a period."

McCarthy has kept seven clean sheets in the Premier League so far this season, though his absence means Fraser Forster will likely make his first appearance in the competition since the 2018/19 season.

Commenting on the rest of the squad, Hasenhuttl added: "Otherwise, we will have a look. We have a few problems with injuries, and we must have a look at who is available.

"I think Fraser is a very good alternative. He really wants to play now and was waiting for his chance.

"He has made a good development and, against a strong opponent, to make the debut of the season is not the worst for a goalkeeper.

"I think, because you can immediately show up. I'm happy that he's here and we have this alternative."

Forster spent last season on loan at Scottish giants Celtic, where he had previously made his name as a top shot stopper before joining the Saints back in 2014. He is also an England international, though hasn't featured for the Three Lions since 2016.
