Alex Morgan hailed the USWNT ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, labeling the American team as "best ever."

Call it a psychological ploy by the veteran striker before this year’s Women’s world Cup that will see the team in Group E, facing the Netherlands, Portugal and Vietnam. But the numbers are there.

"I think that this team is the best we've ever had," she told the Guardian in an interview, adding: "We have the confidence that we need to go into a World Cup and prove why we deserve to win. We have the talent, we have the quality, we have the right coach, the right players, the right camaraderie, the right mentality.

But even if the claims can be backed up, Morgan was cautious to point out that England will be coming into the contest as a serious contender and quite possibly with hyper remembrance of her goal on the scoresheet of the 2019 WC semi that knocked the Lionesses out.

"I think they've definitely come a long way in the last couple of years, and I think that's credit to a lot of things," she said. "No. 1, their domestic league, that has just gotten so much better and so much more competitive in the last five years.

"Their federation's increased focus on their women's program that I don't think existed more than five years ago, bringing in the best and most qualified coaches, making sure that their players are compensated fairly.”

The back-to-back World Cup champions are heavy favorites and Morgan will be looking to bring home her third successive Cup title. The team will square off against Wales on July 9 for their final pre-Cup preparation match.
