Alexandra Popp signs new three-year Wolfsburg contract

Wolfsburg captain Alexandra Popp has signed a new three-year deal with the club, keeping her with the German champions until 2025.
The 31-year-old striker has been with Wolfsburg since 2012 and has won seven Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.
Popp's existing Wolfsburg contract had been poised to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season, but she has now opted to commit her long term future to the club.
"I'm very happy about the recognition and feel extremely comfortable at VfL Wolfsburg," said Popp. "When I look back on the last few years, I'm simply at the best club in Germany.
"I also see outstanding quality in our team and I really enjoy playing with these girls on and off the pitch and fighting for more titles.”
Popp was a pivotal part of the Germany side that reached the Euro 2022 final in England during the summer, finishing as the tournament's joint top scorer with six goals. Having hit a brace in the semi finals against France, she agonisingly missed out on a place in the final through injury.
She remains a huge figure in German football, with 59 goals in 119 appearances for her country.
Securing Popp's services for another three years sees the She Wolves continue to strengthen ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, having already bolstered their squad with the signings of fellow German internationals Jule Brand, Merle Frohms and Marina Hegering earlier this year.
"Alex is one of the most influential personalities in football, not only in Germany but worldwide," added Wolfsburg sporting director, Ralf Kellermann. "Even if she has gained popularity since the European Championships, we have long appreciated her great qualities on the pitch and as a leading player.
"In addition, with her strong mentality and her unbridled thirst for success, Alex is a role model for our young players and also an important part of our squad in this role.
"I am therefore extremely happy that Alex will continue on the path that has been successful with us for at least a decade until at least 2025.”
