Anatomy of a clanger: Andrea Consigli's hilarious own goal against Fiorentina
By Ross Jackson
One of the most universally accepted opinions in football is that you've got to be mad to be a goalkeeper.
In fairness, it's difficult to argue against said theory at times and never do they showcase their, erm, vibrant personalities more than when they've just dropped an absolute clanger and they're looking to blame someone else.
You know what we mean. Take Peter Schmeichel, for example. One of the best goalkeepers to have ever graced the Premier League, yet most people's abiding memory of him is him sprinting out of his goal and going absolutely mental at his defence - usually for no apparent reason.
Seldom do you see a goalkeeper take complete responsibility for their actions, though sometimes they don't really have any other choice.
Back in 2016, Sassuolo travelled to Fiorentina with both sides battling it out for a place in Europe via their final standing in Serie A.
Paulo Sousa's side were enduring a bit of an end-of-season collapse having failed to pick up a win in any of their previous eight outings in all competitions, though with just two home defeats in the league all season - against Rome-based pairing Lazio and Roma - the task ahead of Eusebio Di Francesco's side looked a tough one.
The visitors put up a good account of themselves and with ten minutes remaining Josip Ilicic's second-half strike was all that separated the two teams.
Di Francesco's side went in search of a late equaliser to keep their European dreams alive, though their footballing philosophy wouldn't be abandoned and they'd continue to play attractive passing football out from the back.
Yeahhhhh, about that...
Step forward Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli. I mean, he looks like the kinda shot-stopper who fancies himself with the ball at his feet; white boots, yellow gloves, perfectly trimmed beard, the only problem is he momentarily forgot how to play football.
Stood just inside his own six-yard box under no pressure whatsoever, the Italian tried to play a simple pass out to the defence as he steadied himself to take a simple swipe out of the right boot.
It was the sort of pass you'd fancy even a seven year old to be able to execute, but somehow Consigli managed to hook the ball back into his own goal! If he wasn't quizzed over possible match-fixing after the game then there's absolutely no justice.
The calamitous own goal quashed any hopes of a late Sassuolo comeback as Fiorentina went on to win the game 3-1, but the three points almost seemed irrelevant on the day.
The day belonged to Consigli. A technical genius who deserved all the plaudits that came his way following a truly clinical display.
