Antonio Conte reveals how Spurs can create a 'winning mentality'

Antonio Conte has outlined how he plans to bring a 'winning mentality' to Tottenham.

The Italian's appointment as head coach on Tuesday coincided with the 5,000th day since Spurs last won a trophy - the League Cup back in 2008.

It was hoped that Jose Mourinho would bring that mentality when he became Tottenham's head coach in 2019, but was unable to do so, and Conte has now revealed how his players can change their mindset to end the trophy drought.

"For sure, [mentality] we have to work to improve. It's not easy because you have to work every day, you have to breathe a winning mentality every day," he said.

"You don't invent this, it's impossible to invent and to pay for, it doesn't cost money for a winning mentality.

"You have to take the right people to bring this into the club. You must breathe it every day, you must start every day with this type of mentality. You have to start to think about football for many hours of your life, to improve your desire to win.

"You have to start to think 'ok, I want to win but I know that it means I have to sacrifice, to suffer, to work very hard'. If you start to think in this way, it means you want to become a winner. Otherwise you'll continue to stay at a medium level.

"When I speak about [needing] time, I involve all of these situations and aspects. When you want to become a winner, to win something in your life, it means that you have to start to think that to reach a top target - win a trophy, win a league, win a Champions League, win the Europa League, win the Europa Conference League, win the Carling Cup - you have to know that most of the time in your life you have to dedicate to football.

"It means you want to improve your level. I think at Tottenham we need to improve the level of the team if we want to reach some targets in the present and future. I think this is the key.

"We need to start thinking football more and more and more."
