Arsenal 1-1 Southampton: Players Ratings as Gabriel Sees Red in Entertaining Draw
Arsenal's winless run in the Premier League stretched to six games as Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Southampton at the Emirates.
Theo Walcott capitalised on some slack positional play from the hosts to race through and dink Bernd Leno, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's composed finish squared things up at the start of the second half.
Gabriel was sent off for two bookable offences, making it three red cards in the last five league games for Arsenal's squad. Southampton piled on the pressure late on with their man advantage, though the Gunners stood firm to pick up a point, even hitting the crossbar in injury time through Rob Holding's header.
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal stay 15th with just 13 points after 13 games while the Saints remain in the Champions League qualification spots. Talk about a role reversal, eh?
Let's get into some player ratings.
ARSENAL
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Bernd Leno (GK) - 5/10 - Was helpless for the opening goal. Made a few saves and grabbed a couple of crosses but nothing outstanding that will make his 2020/21 highlight reel.
Rob Holding (CB) - 5/10 - Just seemed to leave massive gaps everywhere. Not a particularly assured presence at the back. Did come agonisingly close to snatching the winner when his header hit the bar, but overall it seems odd that he gets picked while the much-hyped William Saliba is left out in the cold.
Gabriel (CB) - 3/10 - At a certain point, you'd think the Arsenal squad would learn. But no. Gabriel, probably one of their better performers this season, picked up two yellow cards in the second half, yet again leaving the Gunners in the lurch. An inexperienced move but ultimately ridiculous, especially given the side's disciplinary record in recent weeks.
Kieran Tierney (CB) - 5/10 - Was exposed by his non-existent midfield as Walcott ran through to score. Has been identified as a 'trier' by Arsenal fans, but they'll need a lot more than from the squad if results are to pick up.
2. Wing-Backs & Midfielders
Ainsley Maitland-Niles (RWB) - 7/10 - Read the game pretty well, making five interceptions. Arsenal's best defender of the evening, looking more composed than any of his colleagues.
Mohamed Elneny (CM) - 4/10 - Didn't offer a physical presence in midfield. Ran around a lot, so much so that he often lost his runners. The sooner Arsenal have Thomas Partey back fit and available, the better.
Dani Ceballos (CM) - 4/10 - A bit of a sieve defensively. Allowed Southampton's runners to charge into central areas. Went down screaming for a penalty in the first half and didn't get one. Booked and brought off for Joe Willock.
Bukayo Saka (LWB) - 7/10 - Is always one of the more exciting runners with the ball and his work led to Aubameyang's equaliser. A genuine bright spark in an otherwise sorry state of affairs at Arsenal.
3. Forwards
Nicolas Pepe (RW) - 5/10 - Worked himself into some lovely areas out wide but the final ball was often overhit.
Eddie Nketiah (ST) - 6/10 - A neat flick earned Nketiah an assist. A few nice touches here and there but had to make way for David Luiz after Gabriel's red card.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (LW) - 6/10 - Scored for the first time in the league since early November with a composed finish at the start of the second half. Might have led a resurgence in the second half had Gabriel not been sent off. More threatening when occupying central positions, surprisingly enough.
4. Substitutes
David Luiz - 6/10 - Helped shore up Arsenal at the back following his introduction. Did misplace the odd pass here and there.
Joe Willock - 5/10
Cedric - 5/10
SOUTHAMPTON
5. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Alex McCarthy (GK) - 6/10 - A few saves looked a little awkward and unconvincing, but the ends justified the means.
Kyle Walker-Peters (RB) - 6/10 - Took up some good positions on the right but often failed to pick out the correct cross. Is a markedly improved one-on-one defender, though did have a few sticky situations with Saka.
Jannik Vestergaard (CB) - 7/10 - Another composed performance from the Dane, who has been one of the league's best centre-backs this season.
Jan Bednarek (CB) - 5/10 - Was caught out positionally for Aubameyang's strike. Also booked for taking out Nketiah on the break.
Ryan Bertrand (LB) - 5/10 - Booked for taking out Pepe in the first half. Found more space in the second half.
6. Midfielders
Theo Walcott (RM) - 8/10 - Scored with an exceptional dinked finish and celebrated against his former club, which is lovely. Worked tirelessly down the right to help out Walker-Peters. Got in behind Gabriel to earn the Arsenal defender a second yellow card before being substituted.
Oriol Romeu (CM) - 6/10 - Picked out Nathan Redmond with a glorious clipped pass, though the winger couldn't find the back of the net. As combative as ever.
James Ward-Prowse (CM) - 6/10 - Provided his customary devilish set-piece deliveries. Recycled the ball well but wasn't overly threatening with his passing.
Stuart Armstrong (LM) - 5/10 - Made a few nice infield runs to expose Arsenal's central gaps in the first half but his influence waned before he was subbed off.
7. Forwards
Danny Ings (ST) - 5/10 - A frustratingly quiet evening for the England international. Flicked a header wide late on but wasn't at his terrifying best.
Che Adams (ST) - 7/10 - Enjoying a good run of form and set up Walcott's opener. Is quietly becoming one of the better playmaking strikers in the league.
8. Substitutes
Nathan Redmond - 6/10 - Struck the bar when he slipped while trying to convert Romeu's chip.
Moussa Djenepo - 5/10
