Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham: Player ratings as Spurs secure much-needed victory

Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Harry Kane were enough to give Tottenham a much-needed 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday night.

Villa started the game brightly but it would be Spurs who took the lead through Vinicius. Harry Kane played a vital role in the buildup, threading a perfectly-weighted ball through to Lucas Moura, who laid it on a plate for his compatriot to tap home his first Premier League goal.

After the break Villa rallied, but again Spurs would be the ones to score, this time from the penalty spot. Matty Cash was the guilty party, bringing Kane down in the box, who went on to covert from 12 yards.

After this Spurs saw out the game without too much trouble with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg going close to adding to the scoreline late on.

ASTON VILLA RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Emiliano Martinez (GK) - 4/10 - Fluffed his lines in the buildup to Spurs' opener. It was a costly error with his team in the ascendency.

Matty Cash (RB) - 4/10 - Struggled on his return from injury at the hands of Lucas Moura. Also conceded a penalty with a rash challenge on Kane.

Ezri Konsa (CB) - 6/10 - Was pretty solid but was still part of a defence that conceded twice. Football is a funny game.

Tyrone Mings (CB) - 6/10 - As above. Will have done his chances of starting for England next week no harm.

Matt Targett (LB) - 6/10 - One of his side's biggest threats going forward. The timing of his runs and crossing were both good.

2. Midfielders

Douglas Luiz (CM) - 6/10 - Broke things up on occasion, ending the game with three tackles.

John McGinn (CM) - 5/10 - He was chasing shadows for much of the game, being dribbled past on four occasions. Did not create much in possession either.

Morgan Sanson (CM) - 5/10 - Needed to do more on the ball to fill the creative void left by Jack Grealish's absence.

3. Forwards

Bertrand Traore (RW) - 5/10 - Caused Reguilon some problems early on. His end product and set pieces needed to be much better.

Ollie Watkins (ST) - 4/10 - Worked hard as always but lacked the required vision to set his teammates free. Did not have a single shot.

Trezeguet (LW) - 4/10 - Spurned a great chance in the second half. He is no Grealish, that's for sure.

4. Substitutes

Ross Barkley - 5/10 - Had a shot blocked in the closing stages. Perhaps should have done better.

Anwar El Ghazi - 6/10 - Villa's attack looked slightly better after he came on.

Keinan Davis - 6/10 - Full of enthusiasm.

TOTTENHAM PLAYER RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - 7/10 - Not a huge amount to do. Did make a few good saves after the break.

Japhet Tanganga (RB) - 7/10 - Looked pretty comfortable, registering five clearances and catching the eye with a few ventures forward.

Joe Rodon (CB) - 7/10 - Composed and confident, you could not tell that he had not played too often this season.

Davinson Sanchez (CB) - 6/10 - A few rash moments but he was mainly solid. Led the game for clearances with six.

Sergio Reguilon (LB) - 5/10 - Looked pretty shaky defensively in the first half. Forced off with an injury just before the hour mark.

6. Midfielders

Giovani Lo Celso (RM) - 7/10 - Looked classy in possession and carved out a few opportunities. If he continues to perform like this he will be vital.

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) - 7/10 - Excellent hustle in the first half, winning all eight of his ground duels. It was impossible to get the ball off him at times.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - 6/10 - His passing was a bit loose but he got through a lot of dirty work for his team.

Lucas Moura (LM) - 8/10 - Provided the assist for Spurs' opener, timing his run expertly. Looked dangerous throughout showing guile to weave his way into the box.

7. Forwards

Carlos Vinicius (ST) - 6/10 - Netted his first Premier League goal. Won't have an easier finish either, although he celebrated with incredible passion.

Harry Kane (ST) - 8/10 - Created the opener with a perfect pass. Went on to win and convert a penalty after the break. All in all, a very fruitful evening.

8. Substitutes

Ben Davies - 7/10 - Did not put a foot wrong.

Steven Bergwijn - 6/10 - Pressed intensely after coming on.
