Atletico Madrid pipped city rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga crown on the final day of the season, notching just their second Spanish title in the last 25 years.

Diego Simeone's side have been frontrunners for the majority of this season's Spanish top flight, with just one defeat in their opening 22 league outings seeing them on course for their 11th La Liga triumph.

However, Simeone's men hit the buffers slightly at the tail end of the campaign with the three wins from nine threatening to derail their title tilt. though they were helped out by the chasing pack of Barcelona, Real and Sevilla also dropping points.

Their astonishing late comeback against Osasuna in the penultimate game of the campaign meant a win on the final day away at Real Valladolid would see them crowned champions, with Zinedine Zidane's side waiting to pounce should they slip up.

Atleti then sealed the title in dramatic fashion on the final day. Despite going one down (again) to Real Valladolid, a wonderful solo goal from Angel Correa and a Luis Suarez goal proved to be enough for Simeone's side to take all three points, and the title.

Their triumph marks the second time Simeone has led the club to league glory after achieving the feat in the 2013/14 season. Their win seven years ago was also secured on the final day of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.

Atletico can now proudly boast being kings of Spain for just the second time in 25 years, a victory which will no doubt taste all the sweeter given they denied Real the chance to add to their incredible haul of 34 La Liga titles.
