Either England or Australia will book their place in the 2023 Women's World Cup final when the pair of longstanding sporting rivals meet in the last four on Wednesday.

The rivalry that dominates rugby, cricket and netball is now set to move into the football sphere, with a huge opportunity at stake. Neither of these sides have played in the World Cup final before.

England are into the semis for the third consecutive tournament, having previously finished third in 2015 and fourth in 2019. They are reigning European champions and have found new ways to win so far this summer, still yet to consistently replicate the vintage performances of last summer.

Meanwhile, Australia have already broken new ground. Their previous World Cup best was quarter-final exits in 2007, 2011 and 2015. For a while, it didn't look like this would be their year following a slow start in the group stage, but improvement has been visible with each passing round.

Australia vs England H2H record

Australia are the only team to have beaten England since Sarina Wiegman took charge of the Lionesses in September 2021- her only defeat in 37 official games. The game in question was played as recently as April on a rain-soaked night in Brentford and ended a 30-match unbeaten run.

England legend Rachel Yankey scored the only goal of the game inside the first minute when the teams first met in 2003, while Australia won a 2011 friendly. A 2015 Cyprus Cup game ended in a 3-0 England, while a 1-1 draw was also played out between the sides later that year.

Australia team news

Sam Kerr is still on managed minutes as she works her way back to full fitness following the calf injury that ruled her out of action earlier in the tournament. The Matildas captain has only made appearances off the bench so far and that is likely to remain the case here.

England team news

England have no injury concerns ahead of this game, with Lauren James serving the second part of her two-game suspension. The Chelsea forward will get the chance to play again at this tournament, whether it be in the third/fourth place playoff or the final.

Australia vs England score prediction

As England found out last summer, home advantage can be an incredible boost during a major tournament, especially when performances get better and better as the competition progresses and the local support becomes even more widespread.

That is exactly what has happened to Australia over the last month. Their start against Republic of Ireland and Nigeria was poor, but the games since against Canada, Denmark and latterly France have shown a completely different side to the team, galvanised without a fully fit Kerr.

England have shown excellent grit and determination to get to this stage amid all the setbacks and without playing consistently well. But they have also had a more favourable route to this stage and their luck might be about to run out.

Prediction: Australia 2-1 England (aet)
