Barcelona 0-1 Cadiz: Player ratings as visitors earn famous win over poor Barça
Barcelona failed to bounce back from their shock Europa League exit last week as Cadiz earned a famous 1-0 victory at Camp Nou on Monday night.
Lucas Perez was the player to strike just after half time, capitalising on some shoddy Barça defending to earn the visitors all three points and boost their survival hopes in La Liga.
Ousmane Dembele went close early on, bursting into the box before seeing his shot palmed away by Jeremias Ledesma into Ferran Torres' path, but the Spain international again saw his poke saved by the goalkeeper.
The hosts did most of the talking in possession but were given a scare on the counter when Alex Fernandez sent Ruben Sobrino through on goal. He unselfishly squared it for Perez, who could only slice his shot wide.
Dembele again took Barcelona surging forward, though his decision to shoot instead of pass to Frenkie de Jong after getting into the box left the Dutchman with his head in his hands.
They were hit on the break by a Cadiz side who delight in the occasional upset. Salvi Sanchez produced a wonderful cross which Sobrino glanced at Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The rebound eventually fell for former Arsenal forward Perez, who fired into an open net from close range.
Again it was Dembele who looked most likely to drag Barça level, with his powerful shot from distance bringing a decent save from Ledesma. Gavi could have followed in on the rebound, but he couldn't sort his feet out.
After an excellent run of form, Barça have now lost their last two games and have just won victory in the previous four outings.
The defeat means Real Madrid are another step closer to regaining the La Liga title, having dramatically beaten Sevilla on Sunday. Barça remain second, level on points with Sevilla with greater goal difference and a game in hand. Cadiz, meanwhile, have jumped up to 16th in Spain's top flight as they look to avoid relegation.
Barcelona player ratings
1. Barcelona (4-3-3)
Marc-Andre ter Stegen (GK) - 5/10 - Flapped at the cross which Perez ultimately stuck in. In fairness, he could have done with one of his defenders dealing with it. Good tip over the bar to deny Perez.
Sergino Dest (RB) - 5/10 - Keeps getting chances under Xavi but this was another performance of little note. He rarely gave the ball away, in fairness. Picked up a yellow card.
Eric Garcia (CB) - 3/10 - Lack of ability in the air - yes, Garcia is a centre back - showed quite clearly here. Couldn't take control alongside Lenglet, with Cadiz's goal a horrific show of incompetence.
Clement Lenglet (CB) - 3/10 - However Barcelona plan to proceed with Xavi at the helm, it's probably time Lenglet is moved on. Horrible defensive performance alongside Garcia, with neither showing any authority.
Jordi Alba (LB) - 6/10 - Linked up nicely with Gavi on occasion, though overall he wasn't a big threat in attack.
Frenkie De Jong (CM) - 4/10 - Didn't look very assured without Pedri alongside him, which says a lot about their standings at Barcelona.
Sergio Busquets (CM) - 7/10 - Booked for a foul on Jonsson when the Dane attempted to break. Won a lot of aerial balls and was Barça's most authoritative midfielder.
Gavi (CM) - 6/10 - Started nicely and made a few nice dribbles. Could have netted on another day but the ball just didn't drop for him.
Ousmane Dembele (RW) - 8/10 - Had the Cadiz defenders on strings at points, dribbling brilliantly past challenges. Just lacked a calm head to pick out the right pass, which he couldn't. Still, if any of his teammates had performed similarly, Barça would have won.
Memphis Depay (ST) - 6/10 - Did come deep to get involved and made a few nice runs, but couldn't get on the scoresheet and was replaced by Aubameyang.
Ferran Torres (LW) - 4/10 - Made a handful of fouls and wasn't a threat in attack. Eventually booked.
SUB: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 4/10 - Barely got a kick in his 30 minutes on the pitch.
SUB: Adama Traore - 5/10 - Fizzed a couple of decent crosses into the box.
SUB: Luuk de Jong - 5/10 - Got a free header from a corner seconds after his introduction but nodded straight at Ledesma.
