Barcelona confirm Pedri absence vs Villarreal with quad injury

Barcelona have confirmed midfielder Pedri has suffered a right quadriceps injury and will miss this weekend's La Liga clash with Villarreal.

Pedri has featured in both of Barca's La Liga games thus far this season and bagged a goal in a 2-0 win over Cadiz last time out, opening the scoring for his side in the 82nd minute before Ferran Torres added a second in injury time.

The midfielder will have to wait for his next goal, however, with Barcelona confirming Pedri has suffered an injury in training.

"Pedri has a right quadriceps injury. He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will determine his return," read a statement released on the club's official social media channels.

The 20-year-old has been dogged with muscle injuries throughout his short career to date, missing 64 games at both club and international level mainly due to hamstring issues. Last season, Pedri was restricted to 26 La Liga appearances, while in the 2021/22 campaign he managed just 12.

Pedri has recently been utilised in an attacking midfield role alongside fellow wonderkid Gavi and could be replaced by Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati or Ez Abde in the starting lineup on Sunday.

The latter of the three has been heavily linked with a move away from Barcelona this summer, with 90min understanding Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen have registered an interested in the Morocco international's services.
