There's little to choose between the two clubs in terms of trophies won over the years, and that's often been the case on the pitch too.
They met for the first time in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984 with Barcelona winning the first leg 2-0 but Man Utd prevailed 3-0 in the return tie to get the better of their opponents and advance to the semi-final.
Seven years later, managed by legends Johan Cruyff and Alex Ferguson, they met in the final of the competition with the English club once again coming out on top, winning 2-1 thanks to a double from Mark Hughes.
Their first of many Champions League battles came in 1994 and ended 2-2, with Barcelona winning their second group stage match 4-0 on home turf a few weeks later.

They were drawn in the same group again in 1998 and there was nothing between them in either match that year with both games being 3-3 thrillers featuring goals from Rivaldo, Luis Enrique, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, David Beckham and Paul Scholes.
The clubs wouldn't meet again until they were pitted against each other in the Champions League semi-finals a decade later. That year, Man Utd held on to a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou before a stunning Paul Scholes winner gave them a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
Barcelona got revenge the following season, winning 2-0 in the final of the competition, and beat Man Utd in club football's biggest game again in 2011, prevailing 3-1 as that particular Pep Guardiola side established itself as one of the most revered to ever play the game.
Both clubs had new managers and hugely different squads when they next met in 2019 but the outcome was the same with Barca winning 1-0 away and 3-0 at home.
