Bayern Munich withdraw from Kieran Trippier transfer pursuit
- Bayern Munich have ended their pursuit in Kieran Trippier
- German champions had two bids rejected by Newcastle
- Nordi Mukiele now the priority target before transfer deadline
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed the club is no longer pursuing Newcastle United and England right-back Kieran Trippier.
Trippier had been the subject of two failed bids from the reigning German champions, the latter reaching €15m (£12.8m), this month.
"It's settled, yes," Freund told Sky Sport Germany on Bayern’s interest.
"We're only doing something that we're 100 per cent convinced of, that's what we've always said. It has to be right for the player, for us and for the club giving it up, regardless of the parameters, and that wasn't the case with Trippier. That's done."
90min has already reported that the 33-year-old defender, who has already enjoyed a successful stint abroad in his career winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid, was open to the idea of joining Bayern but would always respect Newcastle's stance rather than actively push for an exit.
The Magpies have always been extremely reluctant to sell one of their most important players, especially as a best case scenario would be selling for €25m (£21.4m). Given that Bayern's improved second bid still fell €10m short of that number, even that seemed optimistic.
Instead, Freund confirmed that Bayern remain interested in Paris Saint-Germain right-back Nordi Mukiele. His reply when asked if there is hope that the Frenchman could join before next week’s transfer deadline was simply, "yes".
Mukiele is keen to move after struggling for game time in Paris this season, having only joined the club for €16m from RB Leipzig 18 months ago. Talks between the clubs over the finer details of a loan, including the financial conditions involved, are continuing.
