Best fan moments of the 2023 NWSL season so far

The 2023 NWSL season is well underway, and supporters have not disappointed. Fans kicked off the new campaign by shattering previous attendance records and continuously filling stadiums with flags, tifos and gear to show unwavering support.

With several games still left to be played, we're sure to be impressed by many more incredible shows of support. But for now, these are the best fan-focused moments of the season.

1. The 2023 NWSL opening weekend

The 2023 NWSL season kicked off on March 26, seeing fans shatter previous attendance records while welcoming the new campaign. Throughout six games on Saturday and Sunday, the NWSL averaged an attendance figure of 15,002 fans, breaking the league’s previous record. The previous mark was 10,150 fans, set in 2022.

“Attendance and ticket sales are really the rocket fuel that will feed the growth of this league,” NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said.

Overall, the six NWSL games brought in a total of over 90,000 fans this past weekend.

2. Angel City fans

Angel City first kicked off in 2022, entering the NWSL as the new expansion franchise eager to make an immediate impact. The club became an instant success both on and off the field, revolutionizing the landscape of the league while ushering in a new era of women’s soccer to the city of Los Angeles. 

Fans quickly flocked to boast the ‘asphalt’ and ‘sol rosa’ colors, creating a community-driven atmosphere around the team. And they've been present for their players ever since. Fans even celebrated the birthday of Sydney Leroux's daughter, bringing her toys and birthday hats for all to wear during the special occasion.

Klarna even created the ‘A New Dawn’ capsule collection produced by Suay Sew Shop that boasts the ACFC crest and Klarna logo to certify the item’s authenticity for fans to enjoy.

3. Alex Morgan's impact on the San Diego Wave crowd

Alex Morgan continues to inspire the younger generation. After a San Diego Wave match, the USWNT figure approached eager fans to sign autographs and chat. Their reaction says everything we need to know about the interaction and the impact Morgan has on the younger generation.

4. The tifos

Tifos take so much time and energy to create, and NWSL fans have not disappointed. Throughout the league, we've seen some incredible creations come to life to show support for their team and players.

We included the efforts of the Spirit Squadron, the Washington Spirit supporters group, but Angel City's fans and many others have definitely impressed as well.
