The best goals of the 2022/23 Premier League season - ranked

After nine excruciatingly long months, the 2022/23 Premier League season is finally over.

Manchester City are the champions, Arsenal and Manchester United are on the up, Newcastle are back in the Champions League and Leicester, Leeds and Southampton are to be replaced in the top flight by Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton.

And with international competition reserved for the Women's World Cup this summer, it's finally time for the players to put their feet up and rest – this season one of the longest on record after a mid-season winter Men's World Cup.

With reflection time at a premium, supporters up and down the country often look back on what's gone before them; the best games, the results that got away and, invariably, the best goals of the season.

The latter is something every football fan around the globe can relate to. Who doesn't love a superbly executed team goal, an absolute banger from distance or a goal that really has to be seen to be believed?

There were plenty of those on show in the Premier League this season, the best of which you can find here...

12. Eberechi Eze (CRYSTAL PALACE vs Bournemouth)

Patrick Vieira's departure from Crystal Palace was designed to stop the club's plummet down the Premier League table. Who did they turn to? None other than Roy Hodgson.

A wily old veteran, one of Hodgson's immediate changes was the centralising of Eberechi Eze - a quality player who hadn't been producing the goods for most of the season.

Not only did he find his form, he scored an absolute pearler against Bournemouth. Michael Olise's pass was sensational but the touch, run and finish was sublime.

11. Allan Saint-Maximin (Wolves vs NEWCASTLE)

Champions League returnees Newcastle were trailing Wolves 1-0 early on in the season when the ball dropped to Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman, who didn't enjoy the best of campaigns personally, took a glance at goal, watched the ball down onto his laces and absolutely creamed a volley past the helpless Jose Sa.

A goal well worthy of a point and August's goal of the month gong.

10. Erling Haaland (MANCHESTER CITY vs Manchester United)

Manchester City romped the Premier League title in the end, swatting aside the challenge of Arsenal, and scored a number of pearling goals along the way.

Erling Haaland scored an absolute shed load in his first season, too, with his 36 goals setting a brand new Premier League record. One of his finest came against neighbourhood rivals United at the Etihad, during a first half blitz that took everybody's breath away.

The speed of City's counter and the weight of pass from Kevin De Bruyne to find the Norwegian was absolutely sublime.

9. Danilo (NOTTINGHAM FOREST vs Southampton)

Nottingham Forest's late dash for Premier League survival was aided by a truly wonderful goal against Southampton at a rain-sodden City Ground.

Morgan Gibbs-White, who ran the show for Forest towards the back end of the season, was the genius creator, as his impudent flick allowed the onrushing Danilo a free shot on goal.

The Brazilian smashed his effort home, raising the roof while leading Forest to three hugely important points.

8. Michael Olise (CRYSTAL PALACE vs Man Utd)

Manchester United were well on course for three points away at Crystal Palace, only for Michael Olise to conjure up one of the strikes of the season.

His dipping, bending free-kick evaded the outstretched hand of the sprawling David de Gea, rescuing a point in front of a raucous home crowd. It was real postage stamp stuff from Olise, who showed a number of times throughout the season just how good he is.

7. Ivan Toney (BRENTFORD vs Leeds)

Before Ivan Toney's eight-month ban from football was confirmed, the Brentford and England striker had enjoyed a really, really impressive season.

Only Haaland and Harry Kane scored more goals than Toney, who scored one of his finest against Leeds United at the GTech Community Stadium. Illan Meslier played his part, sauntering miles out of his goal, but there was still a huge amount of work to do when Toney collected the ball.

Once he did, he demonstrated total control and composure to perfectly weight a lob over the retreating Leeds defence.

6. Youri Tielemans (Everton vs LEICESTER)

The first of two Youri Tielemans bangers, this one against Everton left Jordan Pickford absolutely no chance.

Sumptuous control on the knee, from Harvey Barnes' pass, was followed by an absolute tracer bullet of a shot, which slammed into the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar. The reaction of Barnes, and other teammates, said it all.

5. Ilkay Gundogan (Everton vs MANCHESTER CITY)

When you talk about the best goals of the season, you rarely see a contender slotted home from just outside the six-yard box.

But in Ilkay Gundogan's case, this wasn't any old goal. This was a goal that epitomised everything that's brilliant about the German and Manchester City as a team.

Riyad Mahrez laid the groundwork - his nifty footwork proceeding a perfectly weighted ball into the box - before Gundogan controlled, spun and flicked the most audacious effort with the outside of his boot into Jordan Pickford's bottom corner.

Truly brilliant.

4. Miguel Almiron (Fulham vs NEWCASTLE)

One of the surprise packages of the Premier League season, Paraguayan attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron also scored one of the best goals of the season.

Receiving a dinked ball over the top from Bruno Guimaraes, Almiron showed incredible technique to leather a first-time volley past Bernd Leno – one that left the majority of Craven Cottage silenced and the away section dancing with joy.

3. Julio Enciso (BRIGHTON vs Manchester City)

Described as "Ronaldo-esque" by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, Julio Enciso's long-range strike for Brighton against Manchester City bordered on absolute perfection.

The 19-year-old picked up the ball, ran towards the City defence, and unleashed an unstoppable swerving effort that left stand-in goalkeeper Stefan Ortega groping at thin air.

2. Youri Tielemans (Wolves vs LEICESTER)

Part two of the Youri Tielemans goal takes us to Wolves - a ground that really did witness some cracking goals during 2022/23.

James Maddison's whipped free-kick was glanced away from danger by Jonny Otto, though the Spaniard failed to get the distance on the clearance that he'd have liked.

He was made to pay seconds later as Leicester midfielder Tielemans strode forward to meet the ball on the half-volley, smashing home off the inside of Jose Sa's post. Another goal that was rub your eyes good.

1. Matheus Nunes (WOLVES vs Chelsea)

The best goal of the Premier League season, undoubtedly, was Matheus Nunes' magnificent half-volley against Chelsea.

Kalidou Koulibaly's half clearance sat up waiting to be hit, but nobody inside the ground would have anticipated the Portuguese's effort to be as sensational as it was.

From a Marco van Basten-like angle, Nunes thwacked the ball towards goal - making the sort of connection that you dream of as a footballer - and it whizzed past Kepa Arrizabalaga before he knew it.
