With just five available slots in midfield, it's imperative that FPL players get their selection correct. 3-5-2 is an increasingly popular formation in the game, making a mix of expensive, mid-priced and bargain players more and more common as the years go by.

We've picked out the top midfielders for the 2023/24 edition in conjunction with Fantasy Football Hub’s powerful AI Points Predictions, showing the standout predicted points over the first four gameweeks of the season.

Bruno Fernandes - (£8.5m) - 23.2 Predicted Points

A significant price drop of £1.5m for Manchester United penalty taker Bruno Fernandes sees him headline the midfield picks ahead of the new season.

The Red Devils have home clashes with Wolves and Nottingham Forest to look forward to in the first three gameweeks, with Fernands notably cheaper than team-mate Marcus Rashford despite ranking top for key passes (119) and big chances created (32) in 2022/23. Martin Odegaard (£8.5m) - 22.6 Predicted Points

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard racked up 212 points last season to establish himself as a real favourite in the game.

The Norwegian was ever-present in Mikel Arteta's midfield and a key playmaker for a Gunners side who pushed Manchester City all the way in the title race. Odegaard scored 15 Premier League goals last season, all of them from open play, and also created 14 big chances en route to scooping eight assists.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) - 24.9 Predicted Points

Mohamed Salah's hefty price tag on FPL often leaves managers with a huge decision to make - do they gamble on picking up the points without the Egyptian king or do they bank on Liverpool's talisman to continue delivering the outstanding numbers he's previously put up.

Salah costs as much as £4m more than some other premium priced players, but did chalk up 83 points over the final ten gameweeks of 2022/23 - a relatively slow start swallowed up by 13 goal involvements that consisted of eight goals and five assists.

Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) - 21.6 Predicted Points

It's difficult to separate Arsenal penalty taker Bukayo Saka from captain Odegaard, but there's certainly scope to double on the north London duo given their favourable-looking fixtures.

Saka led the way with goal involvements last season, scoring 14 times and setting up a further 12, and is more of a threat in the penalty area than Odegaard. Game time shouldn't be a factor either even though Arsenal have continued to strengthen their squad with big-money signings.

Marcus Rashford (£9.0m) - 21.4 Predicted Points

Marcus Rashford’s home form last season was incredible, with only Erling Haaland beating his 143 points at Old Trafford.

With two attractive home games in the first three, Rashford seems like a dead cert to include after scoring an impressive 13 of his 17 goals on home turf. Rashford also ranked second for big chances last season with 35.

Phil Foden (£7.5m) - 18.7 Predicted Points

At £3m cheaper than Manchestet City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden provides a budget friendly opportunity to double up on the Premier League champions.

Foden managed 18 attacking returns last season from fairly limited minutes and with some key departures this summer - namely Ilkay Gundogan - there’s hope he is destined for a bigger role in Pep Guardiola's side.

Bryan Mbeumo (£6.5m) - 20.3 Predicted Points

With Ivan Toney suspended from all football until January, the weight of expectation at Brentford has been placed on the shoulders of secondary striker Bryan Mbeumo.

The good news from a fantasy perspective is that he's been reclassified as a midfielder, potentially opening up more big points scoring opportunities. The Cameroon international is also expected to take up penalty duties, adding to his set piece reportoire that already consists of free kicks and corners.

Solly March (£6.5m) - 19.5 Predicted Points

Brighton's high attacking output under Roberto De Zerbi, alongside some friendly early fixtures, makes Solly March a very attractive FPL proposition.

The Englishman chalked up an impressive 16 attacking returns last season and can often be found standing over free kicks and corners. Rotation may come into play once Brighton get their Europa League campaign underway, but much of the Seagulls' strength in depth can actually be found on the other flank - Simon Adingra is now in the ranks and could challenge Kaoru Mitoma for starting minutes.

Son Heung-min (£9.0m) - 20.0 Predicted Points

After being priced out of many FPL teams last season, Son Heung-min is back into the mix at a healthy £9m.

The South Korean's importance to Tottenham could be elevated by the potential departure of Harry Kane, and he may even find himself playing as the central striker should England's captain actually depart for Bayern Munich. Last season was a slog, by Son's high standards, but he is a past Premier League Golden Boot winner and can't be overlooked after a £3m price cut.

Eberechi Eze (£6.5m) - 17.3 Predicted Points

With Wilfried Zaha out of the picture for Crystal Palace and Michael Olise front and centre of Chelsea's transfer radar, all eyes could turn to Eberechi Eze in south London.

Eze bagged six goals and two assists in Palace's final ten fixtures of last season, excelling under the management of Roy Hodgson. The veteran boss has seen his appointment at Selhurst Park extended for another year, and that could see Eze push on and make himself one of FPL's most effective mid-priced players.

AI has predicted the highest scoring midfielders for gameweeks one to four / Fantasy Football Hub

The Fantasy Football Hub AI predictions suggests Salah should be held in a higher regard than the rest of his midfield counterparts, with Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) not even making the top ten after his recent injury woes.

AI has predicted Kaoru Mitoma (£6.5m) to continue delivering points for Brighton despite the threat of reduved minutes, while James Maddison (£7.5m) is predicted to make a splash for Tottenham.
