Brighton 1-1 Crystal Palace: Player ratings as late own goal earns Seagulls point

From the AMEX - A late Joachim Andersen own goal cancelled out Conor Gallagher's strike as Brighton came from behind to earn a point against bitter rivals Crystal Palace at the AMEX on Friday night.

Chelsea loanee Gallagher latched onto Jeffrey Schlupp's pass to strike beyond Robert Sanchez in the second half, but the Eagles could only hold that advantage until the 87th minute, when Andersen poked into his own net.

The hosts started brightly and should have gone ahead when Joel Ward's poor header allowed Leandro Trossard to gallop through on goal, but the Belgian was denied by a sprawling Jack Butland.

Brighton were gifted another opportunity to go ahead when Will Hughes headlocked Joel Veltman at a corner, with a VAR intervention resulting in the award of a penalty. However, Pascal Gross struck tamely at Butland.

From the resulting corner, Neal Maupay thought he had bagged the opener when he bundled in from close range, but the striker was adjudged to have fouled Butland when the goalkeeper had control of the ball.

The Seagulls were on top at the half time interval - outshooting their opponents by eight to one - and nearly went 1-0 up after the break, but Jakub Moder saw his flick come back off the bar. Almost immediately afterwards, Palace charged up the field to Brighton's goal and tested Sanchez, who pushed away Odsonne Edouard's near post effort.

While Brighton dominated possession and had the better chances, they went behind in familiar fashion. A Palace attack looked to have died out but Schlupp kept it alive, hooking the ball back to Gallagher who thumped in.

It looked set to be another familiar tale of missed opportunities for Brighton as the clock ticked towards full time, but they drew level late on when Maupay's cross was diverted into his own net by Andersen.

The draw sees Brighton creep up onto 28 points in eighth, while Palace are down in 11th.

Brighton player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Robert Sanchez (GK) - 6/10 - Had no saves to make during the first half. Did well to deny Edouard but little chance for Gallagher's goal.

Joel Veltman (RB) - 6/10 - Got forward well on the right and was often a free man for Brighton.

Adam Webster (CB) - 5/10 - Headed straight at Butland from a corner, though was adjudged to have committed a foul anyway. Looked to have dealt with the danger for Palace's goal but hadn't.

Dan Burn (CB) - 6/10 - Pinged some good passes to wide areas when Brighton created space.

Marc Cucurella (LB) - 7/10 - Delivered some excellent crosses from out wide. A bundle of energy with unmistakeable hair.

2. Midfielders & wing backs

Jakub Moder (RM) - 6/10 - Got in behind Palace's defence on a few occasions but the final ball was often lacking. Flicked the bar with a deft effort at the front post. Went close again but had a strike saved by Butland.

Pascal Gross (CM) - 4/10 - Really terrible penalty which lacked any sort of conviction was batted away by Butland.

Adam Lallana (CM) - 7/10 - Tricky feet and precise passing from Lallana helped Brighton stay on top. Decent shift before he was withdrawn with a knock

Alexis Mac Allister (LM) - 6/10 - Floated around but predominantly played on the left. Few decent moments but nothing particularly eye-catching.

3. Forwards

Neal Maupay (ST) - 6/10 - Thought he'd scored but had his close range effort disallowed for a foul. Played a pivotal role in the goal, smashing across the box for Andersen to net at the wrong end.

Leandro Trossard (ST) - 6/10 - Should have grabbed the opener when clean through but shot straight at Butland.

4. Substitutes

Tariq Lamptey (RWB) - 6/10 - Looked to drive at Mitchell upon his introduction.

Danny Welbeck (ST) - 5/10 - Had a good opportunity late on but put a difficult header over the bar.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Jack Butland (GK) - 8/10 - Stayed big to deny Trossard the opener. Had Palace fans chanting 'Super Jack' as he kept out Gross' poor penalty. Kept his side in the game.

Joel Ward (RB) - 6/10 - Dreadful header almost gifted Brighton the opener. Steady enough otherwise.

Joachim Andersen (CB) - 4/10 - Looked a bit erratic throughout and ultimately cost his side the win with the own goal.

Marc Guehi (CB) - 7/10 - The more composed of Palace's centre backs. Took more care of the ball and covered his box well.

Tyrick Mitchell (LB) - 6/10 - Saw a lot of the ball for Palace, often clearing their lines in defensive moments.

6. Midfielders

Conor Gallagher (CM) - 7/10 - Very much on the periphery of events early on as Palace looked to play on the counter. Made some tackles by was also bypassed at times. Put Palace ahead by thumping in from close range.

Will Hughes (CM) - 5/10 - Brain-fade when he brought down Veltman in the area for a penalty. Booked for a clumsy challenge.

Jeffrey Schlupp (CM) - 6/10 - Won a surprising amount of headers but wasn't overly influential. However, did come up with an important contribution when he assisted Gallagher's strike.

7. Forwards

Michael Olise (RW) - 6/10 - Happy with the ball at his feet, completing three dribbles in the first half. Had a few bright moments in the second before coming off for Benteke.

Odsonne Edouard (ST) - 5/10 - Not overly involved during the first half, having just 15 touches - only Maupay had fewer (eight) during that period. Had Palace's first shot on target with a decent flick at the near post.

Eberechi Eze (LW) - 6/10 - Made his first Premier League start since last May. Clattered into Maupay for a yellow card. Had Palace's only shot of the first half, which was blocked. Looked to be growing into the game but was then subbed off.
