Bruno Fernandes Reveals Tottenham Snub in Favour of 'Dream' Man Utd Switch
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he was determined to move to Old Trafford in January because they are his ‘dream team’, snubbing Tottenham in the process as he suspects they also resurrected their interest from summer.
United backed away from trying to sign Fernandes last summer and he has previously confirmed he would have joined Spurs instead had the Londoners been able to agree a deal with Sporting CP.
But where they had once stopped short of formal interest, United decided to go for it when the winter window came around. Despite another potential opportunity to go to Spurs, Fernandes is adamant there was only one club he wanted to join.
“Tottenham came in the summer but Manchester was in January. Maybe Tottenham came again in January, but when I knew Manchester was interested I just wanted to talk to Manchester,” the Portuguese star explained during an Instagram Live session with Mario Djuorvski.
“Manchester was my dream team in England so I am happy because I have the chance to go to a team that I always dreamed about you know,” he added.
“[Last summer) Tottenham was closer to [signing] me. There were other teams from France and one team from the Spanish league, but for me, when I talked, the first team was Manchester.”
Since arriving at Old Trafford, Fernandes has not been shy about expressing his longstanding admiration for the club, revealing that he first started following them when Cristiano Ronaldo made the switch from Sporting CP to United back in 2003.
“I looked at Manchester with more interest when Cristiano was here because it’s normal when you have Portuguese players, you look at them more than other teams,” Fernandes explained in April.
“But at that moment, I started to look at Manchester in a different way because you see Cristiano, but then you see also the team and you have Paul Scholes, you have [Wayne] Rooney, you have [Ryan] Giggs and you have Roy Keane, [Eric] Cantona before. [Ruud] van Nistelrooy…I can stay here for hours saying all the names of players for Manchester United. Also, Nani, who’s played with me.”
Fernandes made a blistering start to his United career and was named Premier League Player of the Month for February as a result. He immediately lifted the club as a whole and one of the things fans have most been looking forward to is seeing him play alongside Paul Pogba, who hasn’t played since December because of a lengthy recovery from injury.
A report earlier this week revealed the pair have been gelling well upon being able to train together for the first time – five months after Fernandes’ initial arrival. They have very different personalities but there is said to be a shared ‘competitive streak’ that ‘makes them respect each other’.
Speaking himself about the prospect of playing with Pogba, Fernandes told Djurovski: “I think Paul is one of the best players in Manchester and in the world. He was injured for a lot of time. The opportunity to play with him is fantastic because you want to play with the best players you can.”
