Bukayo Saka withdraws from England squad through injury
- Bukayo Saka has returned to Arsenal for injury rehab
- Winger reported for England duty with existing problem
- Could be a doubt for Man City clash on 31 March
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has withdrawn from the England squad ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium due to injury.
Saka had been carrying an injury when he arrived on England duty at the start of the week but has been unable to shake it off and will no play no part in the games.
A statement from England on Thursday night read: "Bukayo Saka has left the England camp and returned to his club for continued rehabilitation. The Arsenal forward reported to St. George's Park with an injury and has been unable to participate in training.
"No further replacements are planned as a 25-man England squad continue their preparation for the forthcoming internationals with Brazil and Belgium."
Saka’s absence from an England perspective, although disappointing in terms of planning for Euro 2024, is ultimately of little consequence for a pair of friendlies. However, it puts a major question mark over his fitness for Arsenal's huge Premier League title clash with Manchester City when club football picks up again at the end of the month.
Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes have each missed out on a Brazil call-up due to injuries and will also be considered doubts to face City until more positive updates come through.
Saka would be a massive miss for the trip to the Etihad Stadium if he is not fit in time. The 22-year-old is Arsenal's top scorer this season, finding the net 16 times in all competitions. Racking up 13 assists brings his total goal contributions for the campaign to 29 in 37 club appearances.
