Cagliari 1-3 Inter: Player Ratings as Nerazzurri Produce Stunning Late Comeback to Go Second
By Max Cooper
Inter bounced back from their midweek Champions League nightmare with a 3-1 victory over Cagliari, but they had to come from behind once again to earn three points.
I Nerazzurri knocked on the door for long periods of the first half, with Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Christian Eriksen all forcing unbelievable saves from shot-stopper Alessio Cragno.
Cagliari made the visitors pay for their missed chances on the stroke of half time, when Riccardo Sottil struck a sweet left-footed volley across Samir Handanovic and into the far corner.
Inter threw everything at the hosts, and eventually got their reward, when Nicolo Barella fired another stunning volley past Cragno from the edge of the box. Now with their tails up, Antonio Conte's men took control, with Danilo D'Ambrosio heading home at the far post to complete the comeback.
Lukaku killed the game in injury time, rounding a marooned Cragno to smash the ball into an empty net and claim a vital three points.
Let's check out the Inter player ratings from an entertaining afternoon in Sardinia.
INTER
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Samir Handanovic (GK) - 7/10 - Stood little chance stopping the opening goal, but could have at least moved for it. Had few genuine saves to make but did what he had to do with comfort.
Milan Skriniar (CB) - 6/10 - Should have done better with his positional play to stop Sottil from blasting home. Nowhere to be seen. Other than that, he was solid enough.
Stefan de Vrij (CB) - 8/10 - Produced a couple of great clearing headers to deny Pavoletti from having a sniff in the air. Commanded the defence as Cagliari went on the attack at the end.
Alessandro Bastoni (CB) - 6/10 - Carried the ball forward from the back, while playing some nice passes. Struggled with the physical presence of Pavoletti. Subbed.
2. Wing-Backs & Midfielders
Matteo Darmian (RWB) - 6/10 - Offered plenty of energy on that right flank, running in behind and stretching the full-backs. Had less impact in the second half and was subbed.
Nicolo Barella (CM) - 9/10 - Charged from box to box, pulling Inter forward and always offering an extra body in the penalty area. Dragged his team level with a stunning volley against his former club. Got the assist for the second. An elite midfielder.
Marcelo Brozovic (CM) - 7/10 - The regista of the team, directing play and keeping Inter ticking over in midfield. Never panicked and provided a cool head at important moments in the game.
Christian Eriksen (CM) - 6/10 - Started the game well, creating a wonderful chance for Lukaku and almost smashing one home himself. Became less effective as the half wore on and lost possession for Cagliari's opener. Subbed after an hour.
Ivan Perisic (LWB) - 5/10 - Hugged the touchline and looked to take on his marker at every given opportunity. Didn't produce the quality required and was subbed at half-time.
3. Forwards
Alexis Sanchez (ST) - 7/10 - Forced two brilliant first-half saves from Cragno, first with a header and then a powerful low drive. Faded from the game as it progressed,
Romelu Lukaku (ST) - 8/10 - Should have broken the deadlock, but linked up brilliantly with Sanchez and Eriksen to carve out some wonderful scoring opportunities. Got his reward with a hard-earned goal in injury time. Powerful, intelligent and technically excellent.
4. Substitutes
Achraf Hakimi (RWB) - 6/10
Stefano Sensi (CM) - 8/10
Ashley Young (LWB) - 6/10
Lautaro Martinez (ST) - 7/10
Danilo D'Ambrosio (RWB) - 8/10
