Callum Wilson Left Frustrated After Substitution During Newcastle's Win Over Everton
By Mitch Wilks
Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce has revealed that striker Callum Wilson was 'upset' after being substituted late on during Newcastle's 2-0 win against Everton on Sunday.
Wilson was the match winner for the Magpies, winning and scoring a penalty before adding a second to secure the three points, but was taken off for Andy Carroll towards the end of the game, denying him a hat-trick.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle, Bruce made sense of the emotions: "He got upset that I took him off with five minutes to go. He’s crucial to us. He’s given us that cutting edge which a goalscorer has."
He praised Newcastle's £20m summer signing for his immediate impact and explained the 'lift' he's inspired in the squad: "To have six already matches, I think, our top scorer last year.
"He’s there. I think that’s the difference, the instinct. He wants to score a goal."
Wilson joined the club following Bournemouth's relegation and was followed by Cherries teammate Ryan Fraser, who was able to join Newcastle on a free transfer after his contract had expired.
Fraser provided the assist for Wilson's second of the game having replaced Allan Saint-Maximin in the 74th minute. The Frenchman had struggled to assert himself onto the opposition and saw a chance saved well by new Everton keeper Robin Olsen in the first half.
Quoted by the Shields Gazette, Bruce explained that the Frenchman picked up an injury in the first half: "He’s took a knock, but we expect him to be OK. Thankfully it’s just a dead leg, so it's a kick. We expect him to make a recovery".
The victory at the weekend knocked Everton off the top of the Premier League table and sees Newcastle in 11th place, level on points with Manchester City who have a game in hand. The Magpies travel to Southampton on Friday night to kick off next weekend's fixtures.
