Carabao Cup second round: Leeds sweep past Barnsley; Newcastle avoid Tranmere scare
By Tom Gott
The second night of Carabao Cup second-round action did not disappoint.
While most of the fun was had on Tuesday, there were still four fixtures left to play on Wednesday, with Leeds, Newcastle and Brighton flying the flag for the Premier League.
It wasn't the evening of upsets, but there was still some exhilarating football on show, with Leeds' triumph over Barnsley and Newcastle's vanquishing of Tranmere both entertaining watches.
Here's how the action unfolded.
Leeds 3-2 Barnsley
Luis Sinisterra's first start for Leeds went pretty well as he curled home from 20 yards to put his side ahead against Barnsley. Sinisterra was then dragged down in the box and up stepped Mateusz Klich to convert from the spot to double Leeds' lead 32 minutes in.
Mads Andersen headed home shortly after, however, to keep the League One side alive in this one, and they missed the chance to go into half-time level as Callum Styles wasted his own spot kick.
Klich would double Leeds' advantage ten minutes into the second half as he swept in a deflected cross from Sinisterra, capping off what was an entertaining 90 minutes of action.
Tranmere 1-2 Newcastle
Newcastle came out strong but found themselves behind after Elliott Nevitt tapped home from close range 21 minutes in, and things went from bad to worse as right-back Emil Krafth was stretchered off soon after.
However, centre-back Jamaal Lascelles, who appeared to break his nose minutes earlier, prodded the Magpies level five minutes before the break, and Chris Wood followed suit seven minutes into the second half to relax any concerns of a cup upset.
Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey, Toby Cudworth and Harry Symeou bring you Talking Transfers, discussing Antony attempting to push through a move to Man Utd, Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang's futures at Barcelona and Arsenal's interest in Pedro Neto. Forest Green 0-3 Brighton
It was a slow start to this one, with Deniz Undav's strike of the post 27 minutes in the first real opportunity on goal, but Brighton eventually wrestled control of proceedings and it was Undav who fired home seven minutes before the break to put the Seagulls ahead.
Summer signing Julio Enciso fluffed a chance to double Brighton's advantage but Steven Alzate came to the rescue moments after as he collected a pass from Encisco to convert from range.
It was a bit ugly at times, but Brighton finished the job through Evan Ferguson's stoppage-time strike.
Wycombe 1-3 Bristol City
18-year-old debutant Dylan Kadji needed just seven minutes of his first senior appearance to make an impact for Bristol City, bundling home from close range.
Ali Al-Hamadi headed an equaliser for Wycombe shortly after the restart, but Kane Wilson would restore Bristool City's advantage 20 minutes before the end, and Antoine Semenyo capped off a fine evening for the visitors with a nice strike at the death.
