Carlos Sanchez Discusses Future After Being Transfer Listed at West Ham
By Mitch Wilks
West Ham midfielder Carlos Sanchez has discussed the possibility of moving to South America this summer, as he looks set to leave West Ham after just two years with the club.
The Colombian has struggled to adapt to life in London since moving from Fiorentina in 2018 and has rapidly fallen out of favour under David Moyes, failing to make an appearance since December.
Sanchez's torrid time in London looks set to end this summer and he has opened up on where he could play his football next. Speaking to Caracol Radio in Colombia, the 34-year-old dismissed an immediate return to his home country: “I wouldn’t say no, but at the moment we are not thinking of going back to Colombia”.
Having clearly struggled to adapt to the paces of English football, The Telegraph reported during the coronavirus break from Premier League play that Moyes is prepared to sell Sanchez this summer, deeming him surplus to requirements.
His £4m move to West Ham in 2018 wasn't his first chance in English football. Sanchez joined Aston Villa in 2014 for a similar fee on a four-year deal, but moved to Fiorentina in 2016 after an underwhelming two years that saw Villa drop back down into the Championship.
The Colombian has made just 17 appearances for the Irons in a forgettable spell which won't see fans missing him all that much. While injuries also played their part, Sanchez never appeared cut out for English football in the first place, never mind when he returned at 32 years old.
His departure would leave room for West Ham to recruit new signings in summer, but with the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, it is likely that the transfer market will also be affected.
