Championship Roundup: Leeds Crowned Champions, Brentford Slip Up, Hull Edge Towards Relegation & More
By Max Cooper
The greatest division in the world's season is coming to an end. The Championship has wowed us for the last 11 months, and its twists and turns have led to one of the most gripping seasons in recent history.
Friday evening saw Leeds United finally reunited with the promised land of the Premier League, following West Brom's surprising 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town, which blew the promotion race wide open.
After the weekend's appetiser offered up such a shock, all eyes turned to Saturday's fixtures, with Brentford needing only a point to leapfrog the Baggies into second place, and plenty of commotion occurring at the bottom.
But surely there weren't any more shocks in this crazy campaign, right? Well, it's our duty at 90min to tell you there was certainly one or two eyebrow-raising results. Here's our look back at another breathless day in the Championship.
We'll start at the top, where Stoke City ended Brentford's incredible eight-game winning streak, claiming a shock 1-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium. Lee Gregory's first-half tap in means the Bees missed the chance to decide their own destiny, and must pray for West Brom to drop points against QPR on the final day of the season.
Brentford's loss also meant that Leeds United were confirmed as champions, as they now boast an unassailable lead at the very top of the table.
Elsewhere at the Championship's summit, Fulham kept their slim hopes of automatic promotion alive with a goal-filled 5-3 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. The Cottagers stormed into a 3-0 lead before half-time, and coach Scott Parker will be hoping for more of the same away at Wigan Athletic on Wednesday evening.
As for the Latics, they suffered last-minute heartbreak at Charlton, conceding a 90th minute equaliser to tie 2-2 in a relegation shootout. The draw puts Wigan on 58 points, but with their impending 12-point deduction, they are set to slip into the bottom three.
This result was great news for fellow strugglers Luton Town, who capitalised on the reprieve to beat doomed Hull City 1-0 at the KC Stadium. With this devastating defeat, the Tigers look destined to drop into League One next year, while the Hatters live to fight another day.
Cardiff City put in a solid display on Saturday afternoon, beating Middlesbrough 3-1, and all-but confirming their place in the upcoming playoffs. The defeat for Boro means they are not yet safe, and face a nervy, final day trip to Sheffield Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Preston North End deepened Birmingham City's woes, beating the sinking Blues 2-0 at Deepdale, leaving them stranded on 50 points and still uncomfortably close to the dreaded drop.
Playoff hopefuls Swansea City played their part though, beating Bristol City 1-0 to remain only three points behind the Bluebirds, maintaining their slim hopes of sneaking into sixth spot.
One team who will not be gatecrashing the top six is Millwall, who lost 4-3 in a topsy-turvy meeting with QPR. Todd Kane scored the all-important winning goal for the R's, who cement their place in the middle of the pack.
In another of the Championship's dead-rubber clashes, Blackburn Rovers and Reading put on a show for their supporters, with the hosts coming out on top in a 4-3 win over the Royals, thanks to a late strike by Sam Gallagher.
Hands up, who cannot wait until Wednesday evening? Me neither!
