Chelsea 0-4 Barcelona: Player ratings as electric Barça stroll to Champions League glory
Barcelona romped to victory in the Women's Champions League final, scoring all of their goals before the break as they thumped Chelsea 4-0.
The game got off to a blistering start with Barça going ahead after 33 seconds courtesy of a bizarre own goal. After this they smelled blood, with a flurry of goals following in quick succession. First, Jenni Hermoso was brought down in the box and after a VAR check Caroline Graham Hansen tucked the ball away.
With little over 20 minutes on the clock, the Spanish side had a third with Aitana Bonmati timing her run to perfection before slotting home cooly. Before the break there was time for a fourth as well, with the electrifying Lieke Martens squaring it to Hansen for her second goal.
After the break Chelsea tried fruitlessly to restore some pride but their opponents largely kept them at arm's length. The victory saw Barça banish their demons from the 2019 final, where they were played off the park by Lyon and lost 4-1. It is also their first ever Champions League crown.
Here are your player ratings for both teams...
CHELSEA PLAYER RATINGS
1. Goalkeeper & defenders
Ann-Katrin Berger (GK) - 5/10 - No heroics this time, although none of the goals were directly her fault.
Niamh Charles (RB) - 4/10 - Not a top level full-back yet. Badly exposed on multiple occasions, most notably for the fourth goal.
Millie Bright (CB) - 3/10 - A litany of mistakes, some of which led to goals. Seriously struggled to deal with Hermoso dropping into midfield.
Magdalena Eriksson (CB) - 3/10 - The skipper could not whip Chelsea's leaky defence into shape. Personally, she struggled as well, particularly when covering for Carter.
Jess Carter (LB) - 4/10 - Looked like someone being played out of position. If the plan was for her to stifle Hansen, it did not work. Far too many individual errors. Going forward, she wasn't too bad.
2. Midfielders
Melanie Leupolz (CM) - 4/10 - Barcelona cut through her like butter and she seriously struggled on the ball. Sacrificed at half time.
Sophie Ingle (CM) - 3/10 - Was supposed to give Chelsea some stability in midfield, however Barça overran her with ease.
Jo So-yun (CM) - 4/10 - Not her useful spritely self. Hampered, like the rest of the Chelsea midfield, by Barcelona's merciless pressing.
3. Forwards
Fran Kirby (RW) - 5/10 - Barely in the game before the break. Grew into the contest as things wore on, though.
Pernille Harder (ST) - 3/10 - Had a hugely presentable chance early on but could not capitalise. Spurned a few opportunities after that as well. Very poor overall.
Sam Kerr (LW) - 7/10 - One flick in the first half was complete magic. Her team's only bright spark. She created a few good chances and made some menacing runs in behind.
4. Substitutes
Guro Reitan - 5/10 - Quite clumsy in possession at times. Did not change things.
Erin Cuthbert - 6/10 - Energetic. Plenty more to come from her next season.
Beth England - 5/10 - Put herself about in the closing exchanges.
BARCELONA PLAYER RATINGS
5. Goalkeeper & defenders
Sandra Panos (GK) - 7/10 - The scoreline may not have shown it but she was busy at times. Her saves were important as well, draining Chelsea of any belief.
Marta Torrejon (RB) - 8/10 - Offered her side another threat with her overlaps. Delivery could have been better but she was often dangerous.
Patricia Guijarro (CB) - 9/10 - Playing out of position but it did not show. Spotless in possession and was surprisingly accomplished in the grittier side of the game as well.
Maria Leon (CB) - 7/10 - Got her makeshift partner through the game without too many problems. Marked Chelsea's forwards closely but guilty of a few lapses in concentration when on the ball.
Leila Ouahabi (LB) - 7/10 - Not as flying going forward as you might expect but she played her role in the win. Steady.
6. Midfielders
Aitana Bonmati (CM) - 9/10 - Her run from midfield for the third goal was the moment of the match. Perfection. Also close to flawless in possession.
Kheira Hamraoui (CM) - 9/10 - Brilliant. The lighthouse in Barcelona's relentless midfield. Was always there to relieve pressure by offering an easy passing lane.
Alexia Putellas (CM) - 9/10 - Wonderfully creative and great to watch. Her energy was mightily impressive as well.
7. Forwards
Lieke Martens (RW) - 9/10 - Irresistible. Her dribbling made Chelsea look like mugs time after time. Deserved more than one goal.
Jenni Hermoso (ST) - 9/10 - Her movement was impossible to deal with, creating the third goal. Linked things expertly.
Caroline Graham Hansen (LW) - 9/10 - Managed to beat Berger from 12 yards, which is an impressive feat. Wreaked havoc on the Chelsea defence all game. They must have been delighted when she went off.
8. Substitutes
Mariona Caldentey - 6/10 - Did not do a great deal but was tidy enough.
Asisat Oshoala - 5/10 - Let a decent chance go begging after coming on.
Vicky Losada - 6/10 - Great to see the captain get on for the last 20 minutes.
