Chelsea 4-0 Morecambe: Player ratings as Blues make light work of Shrimps
Chelsea cruised into the 4th round of the FA Cup with an easy 4-0 victory over League Two Morecombe at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Penning in the Shrimps throughout, the Blues broke the deadlock in the 18th minute courtesy of a drilled finish into the corner by birthday boy Mason Mount.
Morecombe tried to hold onto the 1-0 deficit until half-time but a lovely whipped-cross by Hakim Ziyech in the 44th minute allowed Kai Havertz to softly set up Timo Werner to crush the League Two side's hopes before the break.
The game was sealed early in the second-half when Ziyech dinked a perfectly crafted pass over the top for Callum Hudson-Odoi to connect with in the 49th minute. The rest of the game was a running down the clock affair, with Chelsea slowly pressing the League Two play-off chasing side, resulting eventually in the Blues fourth goal, a header by Havertz.
Here are the Chelsea player ratings from a cruising victory at Stamford Bridge...
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Kepa Arrizabalaga (GK) - 6/10 - Held on well to a surprise wide shot early on, making sure the ball didn't cross over the line. Performed a classic Kepa scrambled dive in the first half, otherwise, had little to do.
César Azpilicueta (RB) - 6/10 - Looked a little laboured down the right. His 401st appearance looks likely to be one of his last for the loyal captain but showed his talent with the cross for the fourth goal.
Kurt Zouma (CB) - 7/10 - Apart from one poor clearance, was the most assured Chelsea player. Showed comfortably why he is a starter.
Antonio Rüdiger (CB) - 6/10 - Spurred a chance over in the first half. Stepped forward to help the midfield throughout. Still behind Thiago Silva in the pecking order though.
Emerson Palmieri (LB) - 6/10 - Moved into the middle throughout the game, almost becoming a centre-midfielder. Had three first-half shots from central positions which caused no stress for the Shrimps goalkeeper. Was absent in his defensive duties multiple times. Ben Chilwell will have no nightmares.
2. Midfielders
Kai Havertz (RM) 7/10 - Fluffed two presentable chances showing a real lack of confidence. Later tipped a perfectly weighted assist for Werner and got on the end of Azpilicueta's cross. Better from the young German.
Billy Gilmour (CM) - 6/10 - The Scottish 19-year-old was industrial in his deep-lying role, performing admirably in his duties. Was quiet with little to do in the middle.
Mason Mount (LM) - 7/10 - Arrowed in his goal showing the gulf between the teams. Drifted around the park, finding lots of space. A good birthday for the 22-year-old England international.
3. Forwards
Hakim Ziyech (RW) - 8/10 - Sent endless crosses into the box, two which created the second and third goals. Nearly scored a screamer himself. Becoming the player Chelsea expected.
Timo Werner (ST) - 6/10 - Should have hit the target with his 3rd-minute header. Slipped up another chance shortly after too, but got a tap-in eventually. Still not showing his talents, being taken off early again.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (LW) - 8/10 - Most-lively player on the pitch. Whipped in plenty of balls and provided the assist for Mount's opener before finishing off himself for the 3rd goal.
4. Substitutes
Christian Pulisic - 6/10 - Should have scored his rebound chance.
Olivier Giroud - 6/10 - Couldn't finish either of his half-chances.
Tammy Abraham - 6/10 - Set up a Giroud chance but did little else in his minor cameo.
Fikayo Tomori - N/A
