Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto each stepped up their recoveries from respective shoulder and knee injuries on Tuesday.

Having returned from a breakout loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, Colwill had started all of Chelsea's Premier League games this season until this month. But having been forced off at half-time of the 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, the 20-year-old had to miss the Manchester City draw.

The home-grown talent, who was of interest to both Brighton and Liverpool during the summer, then also had to pull out of England’s squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Gusto, meanwhile, withdrew from France's Under-21 squad when a scan detected a minor lateral knee ligament injury. He has lost his Chelsea starting place in recent weeks following a suspension and the return of Reece James, but had maintained an important squad role.

But fears of either missing much action eased considerably when Chelsea confirmed that both players were back running on grass this week, always a major step in any recovery process.

It follows the continued progress being made by summer signings Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia, with neither yet to make their official Chelsea debut because of injury problems.

Nkunku, for whom there have been big hopes after his goalscoring in the last couple of years at RB Leipzig, suffered a knee problem during pre-season. Lavia, who chose Chelsea over Liverpool towards the end of the summer transfer window, has been nursing an ankle problem.

There is hope that Nkunku in particular could feature before the end of the calendar year, with Chelsea keen to see their star back in action as soon as possible.
