Chelsea believe the cost of sacking Mauricio Pochettino and his backroom staff could lead to sanctions from the Premier League for breaching Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR), according to a report.

The Blues dropped down to 11th in the table after losing 4-2 at home to Wolves on Sunday. Disgruntled supporters at Stamford Bridge booed the team off at the end of both halves, while fans chanted "we're f***ing s***" as well as the name of former owner Roman Abramovich.

There have been growing calls for Pochettino to be sacked, but the Daily Mail report this may be easier said than done.

Chelsea are said to have concerns over breaching Premier League spending regulations if they sack Pochettino and his staff, with a payout at this stage potentially costing the club in excess of £10m - they are still due to pay £13m to former head coach Graham Potter until he finds a new job too.

If Chelsea fire Pochettino before June, the sum of any payout will count towards this season's PSR calculations. Clubs are allowed to make losses of £105m over a three-year period but the Blues' reckless spending in the transfer market could come back to bite them if they do not qualify for the Champions League - a feat which seems implausible at this stage.

Clubs in breach of PSR could face sanctions such as points deductions, with Everton already having ten points taken off them this season and in line to face further punishments. Nottingham Forest have also been charged and could be deducted points.

Crucially, the report adds Chelsea are not thought to be considering a change of manager at this point, but the financial impact of sacking Pochettino is believed to be a 'major factor' in their thinking. The club would prefer to reassess the situation at the end of the season.

Despite their poor Premier League form, Chelsea have at least reached the final of the Carabao Cup. They will take on Liverpool at Wembley on February 25 with Pochettino looking to win his first trophy in English football.
