In the space of one unconvincing victory over Bournemouth, Chelsea managed to eclipse their goal tally from the previous eight combined matches.

Even after scoring three away to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea have found the net just 34 times in the Premier League this season. The Blues have only scored less than 40 league goals in one top-flight campaign across the club's entire history - and that was 99 years ago.

Here's a look at the form that has carried Chelsea limping into the closing stages of a dire season and what lies ahead.

Chelsea form guide

Frank Lampard ended an individual run of ten successive defeats as a manager across all competitions with a win at the Vitality Stadium, avoiding the ignominy of equalling Daniel Farke's Premier League record.

Going into Saturday's trip to Bournemouth, Chelsea had lost their previous six matches across all competitions. Goals from Conor Gallagher, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix ensured that Chelsea avoided a club-record-equalling seventh consecutive defeat.

Victory at least ensured Chelsea's Premier League survival for the following season but the Blues remain mired in the unfamiliar depths of 11th, sitting behind west London rivals Brentford and Fulham.

Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest - Premier League

Nottingham Forest's trip to Stamford Bridge - the club's first in England's top tier since 1998 - is a meeting between the most active teams in this season's transfer windows.

While Forest sought to conquer with quantity, the quality of Chelsea's expensive assets has scarcely reflected the eye-watering sums. Neither spending splurge has elicited the desired impact but Forest could pay the ultimate price in the form of relegation.

Not so long ago, Chelsea appeared to hold a hoodoo over Manchester City. Lampard actually kickstarted the sequence, overseeing a 2-1 victory in 2020 which confirmed Liverpool as Premier League champions.

Thomas Tuchel underlined the theme with three successive wins at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, culminating in a triumphant Champions League final.

However, City have beaten Chelsea in their subsequent five matches - including three this season - without conceding a single goal.

Just 12 months ago, Chelsea finished three places and a whopping 16 points better off than Manchester United.

While Chelsea lament the failings of a former player in the dugout amid a season of upheaval, the roles have firmly been reversed. Yet, Chelsea will not even have the consolation of Europa League qualification which United earned last term, with the Blues simply intent on avoiding record-low returns across the board.

Chelsea vs Newcastle - Premier League

Across the last three transfer windows, Chelsea and Newcastle are only the two clubs to have spent more than £250m on transfer fees.

Despite the infamously deep pockets of Newcastle's controversial owners, Chelsea's gaggle of free-spending rookies have forked out more than twice as much as the Magpies. Yet, Newcastle's relative penny-pinchers will be the ones reaping the rewards of European football next season.
