Christophe Galtier clarifies PSG vice-captain situation after Presnel Kimpembe hits out
Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier has clarified that Kylian Mbappe has not been promoted to the role of vice-captain at the expense of any other players.
Presnel Kimpembe, who has played only once since October because of injury, has often captained PSG in the absence of main skipper Marquinhos.
But when Mbappe was handed the armband for the recent Coupe de France thrashing of Pays de Cassel, Galtier seemed to suggest that the 23-year-old had been vice-captain since the summer.
Kimpembe took exception to that, posting on social media afterwards that it was ‘completely false’ and that he had not been ‘made aware’ of the situation. But the centre-back still insisted he ‘will always respect the decisions of the club’.
Galtier was forced to clear things up as PSG prepare to face Reims on Sunday, insisting that Mbappe is actually one of several vice-captains in the squad – alongside Kimpembe.
“It's a communication error. I misspoke,” he admitted.
“Kylian is one of the vice-captains. We have four: Mbappe, [Sergio] Ramos, Kimpembe and [Marco] Verratti. Kylian is one of the vice-captains, but he is not the vice-captain.”
