Club America's Nestor Araujo sidelined for the remainder of 2023 Liga MX Apertura
- Defender sidelined after suffering a rupture of the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee
- Club America to announce recovery plan
- Jardine to depend on Igor Lichnovsky
Club America defender Nestor Araujo will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 Liga MX Apertura after suffering a rupture of the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.
The player picked up the injury during a training session on Monday, and left immediately to undergo several tests. Araujo will continue to be examined by the team, before Club America announce a definitive course of rehabilitation.
"Club América reports that Néstor Araujo suffered a rupture of the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. Our player is undergoing evaluation to determine definitive treatment," said the team in a statement.
The defender last featured for the Eagles on August 9, when facing Major League Soccer’s Nashville SC in the inaugural Leagues Cup tournament. He now joins the long list of injured players, most notably standing alongside Israel Reyes and Sebastian Cacceres.
To combat the absences, new head coach André Jardine signed Tigres center back Igor Lichnovsky. He quickly found his way to the starting 11, playing alongside a backline of Ramón Juárez Del Castillo, Kevin Alvarez and Luis Fuentes.
Despite the roster challenges, Club America triumphed against rivals Chivas de Guadalajara 4-0 to reach third place on the Liga MX table with 14 points in seven games and a record of 4W-1L-2D. The Mexican giants face Queretaro on Wednesday at Estadio Corregidora in Queretaro.
