Brazil won the trophy way back in 2007, with Alves getting on the scoresheet in the final, and had to wait until 2019 to lift it again. 12 years later, Alves had gone from exciting young full-back to the leader of the national team - lifting the trophy as his nation's captain following a final win over Peru.

Alves received a hero's welcome from Sao Paulo fans when he joined the club as a free agent in 2019. 44,000 fans crowded into Estádio do Morumbi to catch a glimpse of the footballing legend during his unveiling, and their enthusiasm was later rewarded as Alves helped Sao Paulo to their first Campeonato Paulista since 2005 in 2021.

The full-back has worn quite a few different shirt numbers throughout his career (at PSG alone he work four different ones in just two seasons). At Barcelona, over two spells at the club, Alves has donned the number 2, 6, 20, 22 and now he wears the number 8. Alves actually asked Barca legend, and former teammate, Andres Iniesta for permission to wear the 8 jersey - permission Iniesta was more than happy to give.
