David De Gea is close to signing a new contract with Manchester United, with terms agreed in principle, 90min understands.

The former Spanish international is coming to the end of his 12th season as United number one, and has recently broken the record for the most matches played by a goalkeeper in club history.

While the 32-year-old has made a number of errors leading to goals this season and there are concerns about his ability distributing the ball, United manager Erik ten Hag has pushed for a new deal to be reached, and the process is now nearing a conclusion with talks progressing in recent weeks.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of June as it stands, and United have chosen not to trigger an automatic one-year extension on his existing terms, due to his weekly salary which totals more than £350,000 a week at present. Instead, United have sought to agree reduced terms for De Gea to extend, with add-ons likely to be triggered based on appearances and performances.

United are still in the market to sign another goalkeeper to compete with De Gea in the summer, though will reassess their options when the season concludes and clarity is reached over the ownership of the club. The Glazer family are currently considering offers of minority investment or full sale options with Sheihk Jassim of Qatar and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, of INEOS.

Dean Henderson's loan at Nottingham Forest will end in the summer and United will make a decision on how to proceed with his future, while they also hold interest in Porto's Diogo Costa and Brentford's David Raya.

United's priority areas to strengthen this summer are up front and in central midfield, and they are awaiting for the conclusion of the sale process and to find out if they will qualify for the Champions League before setting finalised budgets.
