Deloitte Football Money League ranks women's teams for the first time

The Deloitte Football Money League has turned its attention to women’s football for the first time, ranking the 15 clubs to provide information.

The men’s equivalent was first published for the 1996/97 season and has long been an established authority on football finances, highlighting the revenue of clubs on a yearly basis.

The first women’s Money League covers the 2021/22 season, the most recent fully concluded campaign, with Barcelona top of the pile after bringing in revenues totalling €7.7m.

Manchester United are a surprise second place in the rankings, taking in the equivalent of €6m. That is more than Manchester City (€5.1m) and significantly more than Arsenal (€2.2m) and Chelsea (€1.8m).

Paris Saint-Germain enjoyed €3.6m, putting them fourth overall, although domestic rivals and reigning European champions Lyon are not included as they did not take part in the report.

Clubs from the NWSL are not part of the European-focused Money League.

The figures in the list reflect revenue earned during the 2021/22 season, the first in England following the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions. The wealth in the WSL has rapidly grown in recent years thanks to commercial involvement from brands like title Barclays, plus broadcast deals with Sky Sports and BBC that have boosted club revenues.

These Money League numbers were also part of an accounting period that finished before Euro 2022 in the summer, with the tournament a catalyst for renewed growth of the WSL and across the continent. The impact of that, which has seen WSL crowds in particular soar by over 200% in the first half of this season, will be reflected in 2022/23 finances.
