Dimitar Berbatov reveals why he expects Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham despite Man Utd interest
By Sean Walsh
Tottenham Hotspur icon Dimitar Berbatov has admitted he cannot imagine the club without Harry Kane in the team.
Kane has a year left to run on his contract and 90min understands talks over a new one are on hold until the club appoint a new head coach.
While Spurs have struggled this season, Kane has become the all-time leading scorer for club and country, cementing his place in the history books.
Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs interested in the England captain.
Ex-Tottenham star Berbatov, speaking on behalf of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, explained to 90min why he simply cannot envisage Kane beginning next season at another club.
"Probably in the summer we're going to be witnessing again that type of saga, Kane going somewhere, that's TV soap opera," Berbatov said.
"But at the same time, I don't think he's going to leave. I think his legacy with Spurs is so big now that you cannot tarnish it. Maybe you want to, but you will not allow yourself to do it because it's so big, you know?
"And you know, the goalscoring record and everything that he's achieved with Spurs - when you say Spurs, in my mind is Harry Kane. First thing in my mind, Kane. His story with Spurs is unbelievable.
"I think he's going to be staying there in my mind. The only thing I would wish for him is he's going to be scoring goals, probably break Alan Shearer's [Premier League] scoring record at some point.
"The only thing I want to wish [for] him is that maybe along the way he wins something as well."
Kane might stay put at Tottenham this summer in-part due to chairman Daniel Levy proving to be a notoriously tricky person to deal with in the transfer market - Berbatov's own move from Spurs to Man Utd famously left Sir Alex Ferguson claiming negotiating with him was worse than having his hip replaced.
Berbatov opened up on this transfer saga, defending Levy for doing right by his club.
"Well, Daniel Levy is a businessman. He's defending his club. He's working in the interests of the club. And if I was in his place, I would do the same thing," Berbatov said.
"So he knows exactly what he wants, exactly how to get it.
"If there is going to be a negotiation, if United proceed and try to buy Kane, the negotiation will be very difficult for them, and they know that they've been there before with me, with [Michael] Carrick. At one point they'll they'll do it again.
"Is it going to be with Harry Kane? Well, let's wait and see. The price tag will be massive. But at the same time, as I said, I don't think it's going to happen.
"I think the legacy, sometimes players build legacies and you don't want to break it. Sometimes even legacies and records are more important than titles, depending on who you ask. So everybody needs to choose in this case. Harry Kane needs to trust what is important to him and then go and do it."
